Was in penrith last night and noticed Mountain Designs had moved in, with a sale, usually don't shop there but went in just to have a look.

Walked away with 2 of their small length R3.4 self inflating mats. I think they weigh in at 480g on the pack, but the website says more: http://www.mountaindesigns.com/online-s ... odID=15311

Not weighed it yet. After a full night open, one slightly increased in bulk, the other is still a pancake LOL. I know you get what you pay for, but for $70 I thought they might be ok. Guess I can always just blow em up.

Still, better than the monster I used to have.

I bought one on the monster pads for winter, took 3 days to expand the first time but OK from then on

OK, cool. I put a bit of air into them this morning, but will let em go all weekend to see what they do.

My experiance has always been that the self inflating mat is in name only & they all require some inflation by mouth.

Sometimes this happens the first time. I think it's because the factory has rolled them up tight and then they stay like that until they are sold. They have to 'remember' how to self inflate. If you blow a bit of air into them for the first use they should self inflate after that. Although as mentioned above most people blow a little bit of air into their 'self inflating' mat as well each use. If one or both continues to give you any problems go back into the Penrith store.

Correct - they are machine-rolled to begin with. It helps to roll them up the opposite way then let them unroll themselves while they inflate. I have had a few customers come in with this issue and I am usually able to get the mat to inflate in front of them in the store without using my breath.

A word of warning though - test them out before you travel because the quality control hasn't been great lately. If they're deflating at all the Penrith store should replace them on the spot for you. You can request to test the mat in store too but there's not much room in that store to lay about on mats.

Thanks all, They did eventually "self inflate" after a day or so.

Going to be chasing a stove and cookware soon so a trip back to Penrith may be in order.
