It's going to be a sad day in Hobart when the good folk at Passion8 close their doors for the last time in, I believe, Feb 2013. I was told a shocking story of a lease negotiation where the agent apparently has a better offer, and has strung Passion8 along for many months, with them believing they were negotiating in good faith . All I can hope is that they have the passion and energy to open somewhere else in Hobart.

I have bought a lot of stuff there over the years, and I'm going to miss their great service, and their great advice. My latest purchase (Wednesday) was a Second Arrow - 25% off. I know, not light weight, but I do not mind carrying a few extra grams for the peace of mind such gear gives me - one less thing to worry about, because I KNOW it will hold up. And I don't need to carry a footprint to keep the tent water-free in inclement weather (I am in Tas after all).

they often arent intersted in helping people just making as much money as they can. no matter what the negative outcome.
similar thing happened in wellington to a longstanding outdoor shop. had his rent doubled. moved elsewhere, a bigger rival moved in and took all his old customers who turned up at the shop.

In todays world of online shopping, I expect more to close in the coming months/years. How Hobart has managed to sport 7 outdoor shops all within cooee of each other is a wonder.

major Chain stores often have the ability to withstand online shopping and stay afloat. its the small chain stores and sole traders that struggle. how many of those 7 are sole traders or small chains?

We have Snowgum, Macpac, Mountain Designs (all chains), as well as Passion 8, Mountain Creek Outdoors and Jolly Swagman (independents).
Who have I forgotten?

I haven't been to passion8, didn't they stock macpac, did they loose the contract, did macpac start up in competition ???
7 stores is silly, that's like one for each gear freak ( without selling fashion)

Allgoods is next to Anaconda out at Cambridge.

I always forget about Kathmandu.

Nine stores then (depending on loudness of cooee) That's too many stores.

The workers will likely find employment, never nice for owners, you wouldn't start an independent outdoor shop if it was Just about the money.

There's also an Allgoods on Harrington Street.

Passion8 has the nicest looking store, nice staff and some good brands, I was always perplexed by the lack of variety in clothing particularly.
