Wondering what sun hat does everyone wear?

I used a cotton wide brim hat that was in my closet for the Overland Track this year. It covered my face and most of my neck just fine except the second last day when I got burnt there.
Since it was cotton and hot, dipped my hat in the creek/river and had instant air con for a few hours

However I'm thinking of getting a waterproof bucket hats (the round fishing/tourist ones) so it dries faster.

I use a "Legionnaire's hat" - basically a peaked cap with a flap at the back.

This is my choice.
Have used it here and overseas for years.

I took Macpacs Encompas (http://www.macpac.com.au/mens/accessori ... s-hat.html) out for a spin today, I can't speak to it's durability (time will tell), but I quite like this hat. Excellent sun protection and the sinch seems fairly decent. At this stage the old baseball cap is about to be relegated to the back of the cupboard.

I use a Huxley Creek Hat which I picked up last year when in NZ.

It's got a wide all-round brim and a flap at the back for sun protection.

As I think it ranks high in the silly looking hat stakes, I usually try to remember to take it off for photos (but often forget).

Just a buff is the coolest (as in themoregulation ) option in my experience. Wear it down to the eyebrows.

Two buffs and sunglasses and you barely need suncream at all. However it looks a long way from the other definition of coolest.

It varies between what I do, but usually the same style hat as Flatfoot, or one of these rippers...in black. Very breezy, great sun protection, and kinda cool IMO. Remarkably sturdy on your noggin.

I've also recently acquired a Macpac Encompass hat and found it very comfortable, offers excellent protection from the sun and wicks sweat effectively.

Strider, in all my time in the Aussie bush I have seen plenty of frill necks but only see Akubras in their raw state, hopping into their burrows and still attached to their host

Seriously the frillneck hats are the bomb for bushwalking, they are light, great protection from sun, don't bump into your pack, stick like glue during high wind, double as an oven mit or towel, can be adjusted across the face for warmth or opened up to catch breezes when hot.
To top it all off they were invented by an Aussie landscaper who got sick of putting a spare tee under the back of his cap for sun protection.

I'm on my 4th one in about 20 years and the old ones get patched with duct tape and used for around the yard or fishing trips. (using one for sanding the outside of our Queenslander now, keeps the dust out of whats left of my hair)

Normally in the summer: Straw hat


Summer bushwalking: Brahmah Kangaroo leather (much more packable and better in scrub)


When it's less sunny: Just a cap


When it's cold: Windstopper beanie with ear flaps
