TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Sure looks like one of his creations. I wonder if this means its nearing commercial availability?

For several years Roger had the drawings of his tents on the DIY pages at bushwalking.org.au
In fact for a short period he was making and selling them but quickly found out that he was working for far too many ours for the expected returns.
I almost bought one but I think by then Henry had started designing the Scarp so did not go ahead with the Caffin tent.

I think Caffin is like a good professor - always worth listening too and always with good insight but not always right in the end (but then who am I to judge? ).

I really do enjoy his style and contribution.

As it has already been said, Roger has been making and using his tents for quite some time.
Nothing new with seeing a photo of one (on the internet), especially given he is the editor of The Bushwalker.

EDIT: Assuming you already knew about the thread at BPL.

Yes it was - but not as principal author (he has added some editorial), For those who want to read the Bushwalker, you can download it here -

Ha yes, I guess we assume everyone knows who (the other) Roger is. For those looking for recent advances there is a growing topic on the Backpacking Light (US) forum following the tent and it's commercial production.

I would have sworn we had a thread here about them too but after spending the past 10 minutes looking I will be damned if I can find it.

Does anyone know what is happening with these tents? Can someone ask on BPL? My membership expired :-(
I ideally want to know when the winter versions will come available and how much they might cost.

Roger has posted a timeline for the winter version, it was at least 3 years. There was something about cost too, but I forgot.

EDIT: Price, High end of the Ultralight market.

Yeah that is what I thought - ages away! Will have to make do with my Nallo 2 for now. I do want one though when they become available in the future.

I reread the thread and changed my mind, it might be on the market in a couple of years already.

Roger has been having some issues getting the text working. It might be some time yet. This is from the BPL thread.

I reread the thread and changed my mind, it might be on the market in a couple of years already.

The Product manager at Easton Mountain Products is interested in producing both the summer and winter versions, but we are having a problem finding a suitable Asian factory. The Asians are good at making pop-ups, but something as technical as a UL high-performance tunnel tent is not something they are familiar with. The idea of anything other than a stock 'French' seam is ... difficult. Part of the problem is that while management might be able to speak and read English, the staff who do the sewing can't. So all my instructions get lost. Sigh.

I have had some success with a different factory, but I understand that factory may be more expensive, and I do not control the $$ side of things. The Easton Sales Dept is unhappy with the whole idea anyhow because the tunnels are not price-competitive with Walmart. Obviously they have no idea of the outdoors gear market! Exactly how the Easton Sales Dept runs is not entirely clear to me - I thought they were meant to be staff who were told what to do by the CEO. Odd.

But we are still trying.

Cheers
Roger

A CEO can only make decisions based on the information provided by his/her staff. Businesses micromanaged by one person, as you suggest should be the case, are almost certainly doomed to fail in achieving their objectives. There is no "I" in "Team". Why you would be willing to enter into such an online discussion is beyond me - it is not only wildly unprofessional but quite obviously also puts your business prospects with EMP at risk.

I do agree, however, that this industry is usually not the place for cost-leadership type behaviour. Hopefully you get production underway soon.

Have they ever heard of a little brand called Hilleberg? Not exactly cheap and they seem to do all right.

I dunno, Strider, lots of successful companies are propelled primarily by the vision and conviction of their CEOs. To suggest that a CEO's can only and should only make reactive decision based upon internal advice sounds like pretty bad leadership to me. Managers can make suggestions to the exec but since EMP themselves approached Roger, not vice versa, one would assume that someone over there has made an executive decision to actively pursue this project. As to whether it's appropriate to discuss this on an open forum, this is a pretty small little community so no reason to suspect that anything posted here will necessarily get back to anybody at EMP. And again they are the ones who approached Roger so presumably they want this to work at least as much as he does.
