No this is not a joke topic. Although Im sure there'll be a few. So what do people find the most comfortable? Boxers? Briefs? Lycra? Going commando? Any specific brands one prefers?

Synthetics definitely wick the sweat away better than cotton. I'm a briefs man but have been considering trying the "trunk" style for walking.

Merino boxers ... comfy, less smelly, keep you warm when wet.

I've tried Mountain Designs, Macpac and Kathmandu. All seem pretty good .. though they last longer if you wash them in a laundry liquid or powder that DOESN'T have added enzymes. These degrade the yarn quite quickly. And if you're counting your pennies, buy them when on special. They're not cheap.

cheers

Peter

I tried Icebreaker briefs - on a 4 day walk I wore them for two days, then when I couldn't put up with them any longer I used my satin boxers, then on day 4 just went commando. Binned the Icebreakers when I got home.

Next I tried some lightweight Macpac merino boxer briefs, but they tended to ride up a bit, but I kept using them until they quickly wore out. Otherwise they were okay.

Now days these are good: http://www.exofficio.com/products/details/mens-give-n-go-boxer-brief.

I agree with you there, I don't wear them in such conditions. In cold weather I wear merino underwear and long trousers, Which Trousers depend on the conditions.

Mmmm sounds like Merino in the cooler months is popular. I will admit my first thought of merino undies as being very woolly jocks. LOL I do preferred a semi trunk style as Jock just ride and strangle ones bits.

I have to say I have lots of Icebreaker gear and it's great except for the briefs.
In a word they are *&%$#! and binning is too good for them.

Just tried the local Big W for the Cool Max (the site said they sell them) but they didnt have any in stock. They did have another sport type brand , but I didnt take much notice of the brand, but Merrel????????? comes to mind.

"Bike pants" approach works best for me - specifically 9inch heatgear underwear. Saves chaffing and as i treat with permethrin, saves bugs in the nether regions as well :)

I'll give these a very big +1.

I walked from Mountain Creek to Harrietville a few years back wearing loose silk boxers, and to cut a long story short, never again.

Generally anything that goes right down to just above the knees does it for me, but Jockeys just do it for me.

I have found standard cotton jocks to be just fine for walks of up to a week. (I haven't walked longer so cannot comment on that)

I have the jocks as recommended by wayno and icebreaker 'boyleg' jocks.

I have to say the woolly icebreaker is the winner for extended trips. Usually I am very cynical about icebreaker (and merino in general) but their jocks are the bomb. I've worn them for substantial periods and my only complaint is the amount of black wooly fluff that ends up *ahem* in your nether regions.

The synthetic coolmax stuff is great, especially for highly active daytrips but tends to stink when really sweaty. Dries fast though, which the wooly jocks don't do.

I'll chip in another vote for bike shorts, which I've come to call my 'sexy time undies'. They protect from a mean chafeage and are essential in warding off John Wayne style walking after about 10kms.

Maybe this is too much imagery for one post... Nah!

Im a freeballer meself...breaths well :)

If I get chaffing, which usually happens every few days on extended walks, I use a couple of treatments of some anti fungal foot cream to the needed area.

I wear the same as Phil...Nike DryFit running shorts with built in boxer.
They've been fine in the scrub...I wear these shorts on their own, even in horrendous Tassie weather and scrub... they handle bush bashing quite well.
Plus, they dry super quick, are light and breezy.

I don't understand the IB undies criticism, perhaps because no one has articulated their reasons for hating them. I wear only IB men's briefs every day for every activity in all weather and I love them. They are by far the most comfortable undies I have ever had. I have no chafing and no wedgies, no stink and no sweat. And no, I don't work for IB and we don't sell the undies in my shop so no vested interest. Obviously they're not for everyone but I would like to know why. Maybe it's a male thing.

Yeah I don't get the hate for IB briefs. I use em, they're great. I just ordered several more pairs from mainpeak at only $22.

I wouldnt mind a little more detail as to why for the "IB" undies (I assume you mean Icebreaker). However I guess as more hiking is done in the cooler months, I suppose Im more interested in the cooler/less sweaty styles for up here in Qld, where mid winter can still be in the low 20`s.

I'd like to throw a vote in for satin boxers, very light and comfortable.
Used to have plenty chafing troubles with jocks but the airyness (is that a word?) of the boxers is
great. Maybe the only hazard is the open leg structure where the odd leech might manage to wander ......yaaarrgghhh!
To many chafing seams, zips etc. in my daks to go the ultimate airy....commando.
