I'm looking at the new 3 season Hilleberg Anjan tents, which I'd use mainly for 2 people (+ gear obviously). Would it be better to get the 3 person size, for the benefit of a little extra room and only 200g extra weight? Also, has anyone had any experience with the anjan tents, ie. pros/cons? I'm new to the forum, so apologies if I've missed a rule somewhere to do with posting!

I have a 3 on order. It might even arrive today, so I can try it out this weekend. But I doubt it.

I chose the 3 because I wanted a two person tent. The downside is that the extra size may be difficult to accommodate at some sites. I have alternatives so I'm not concerned by this.

Interestingly, the stated weight of the tent has increased since it was released. The 2012 catalogue has it at its lightest. I wonder if they've changed anything?

It had one bad review.... Someone observed rain splashes on the inner if camped on a hard surface and they noticed a drip or two in the vestibule from a leaky zip. Google it. It's worth a read. All other reviews I've read seem positive.

Thanks for the reply! I think I'm leaning towards the 3 person size at the moment...interesting about the added weight, I wonder what they've changed? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts of the anjan when you try it out too.

I have slept in the tent next to an Anjan 2 and they are very noisy when its windy! Otherwise they look pretty good.

for $20 bucks difference and being 200 grams heavier, I'd choose the 3 over the 2 unless you're going solo most the time.

I had a similar thought when choosing the nammatj 2 vs nammatj 3. So glad I got the 3, it gives you much more space to sort your gear out when theres 2 people inside.

Nice. Usual hilleberg quality fittings and stitching. Very light silky outer. Interesting.

It is far less bulky than the Nallo 3 tents that I've set up. It really needs a smaller stuff bag than the one supplied. I might use a smaller dry sack I think.

It's designed to take a second set of poles for more serious conditions. I'm thinking that my second set might be fibraplex carbon fibre. That would give me a light weight option for lighter conditions as well as a tough dual pole configuration.

Yep I've read the mixed reviews on those poles.

With the carbon fibre poles I could get the weight down by another couple of hundred grams. Nice.

Not that I usually care about weight...... Lol.

High surface area limited tensioning. A third pole would help no end.

Speaking of wind Phil the only guy I know that had carbon fibre poles used tent pegs and duct tape to hold them together after multiple breaks....Should be fine for the OLT and WOJ though

The fly is a silnylon as opposed to most tents which are a polyurethane nylon or polyester.

So the fly sags and stretches more with moisture (dew, rain etc) than most other tents.

I would have said most tents are silnylon these days. It's just a matter of retensioning once it's sagged.

Does anyone routinely use the self tensioning guy additions?
(Apologies for going off topic, but responding to the 'stretchiness when wet' factor causing 'flapping at night' issue)

There are more but still most (in the major brands e.g. North Face, Mountain Hardwear, MSR etc) are polyurethane coated (usually nylon but also polyester etc.) as apposed to silicone coated. These materials don't sag anywhere near as much (they aren't generally as strong either).

Agree with the solution however, especially on a tunnel tent.

A quick trip to Pelion to try out the new tent.

Perfect weather for walking and a dry weekend. Met a couple of other forum members staying in the hut.

The Anjan is just as easy to erect as a Nallo. It's also just as big.

I experimented with the fold back outer at each end. Easy to use and I'm sure nice in warm weather.

The higher skirt shouldn't be a problem, but this weekend wasn't a good test for it.

It's certainly cavernous for one.

Yes, I have the Anjan 2, which I use primarily as a solo tent;
I used it for 12 days on the POW's in Jan. and other than the flapping I really appreciated the extra room (this was a replacement for my previous Soulo; half a kilo lighter and roomier at wholesale price was too good to pass up).

The flapping is more evident as its the much thinner and lighter Kerlon 1000 fly material.

I'd def go up to the 3 for a regular 2 person tent as it'd be cosy for 2 people.

Still not convinced about this tent...its light and roomy and excellent build quality as you'd expect from Hilleberg...but I have had rain splash in under the high fly, the vestibule zip doesn't have a cover / verandah, and the flappage, despite perfect set up could be a turn off for some. I think.I still prefer free standing models too, despite their extra weight.

That's true but is not a four season tent like the Soulo.
The Anjan is yellow label ... not up to the Nallo either.

I'd classify the Soulo as 5 season (5th season being mountaineering).
I do agree, Anjan is good, but i'll probably also return to the Soulo in time.
Be interesting to see if Hilleberg bring out a 3 season solo tent in the near future...

Is hilleberg likely to address the high fly and vestibule zip problems any time soon, or will they leave it as is?

Also, sorry to go off topic a bit, but what are the alternatives to the anjan, ie. similar weight, quality and size?

And Phil, was the tent easy to set up on a platform? This will most likely be the tent I have when I do the OT, so I'm curious...

Hilleberg probably see them as features not problems. I might agree.

A Nallo might be a good alternative. Possibly overkill?

Yep these tents are perfect for platform use. All the OT platforms are easily large enough. Some other walks might have less room I guess. (I've never taken a tape measure).

Yep I agree. My Anjan has a place in my tent inventory, but I'll use my Rab Latok mountaineering tent for more extreme stuff. Or where a tiny footprint is important.

Having said that, I wouldn't be overly concerned if my Anjan got snowed on or experienced some strong winds.

I had a bit of a perv at Miyata's Anjan up at Pelion. My observations:
- Appeared to be the usual quality Hilleberg product
- I thought it was a two man tent - oops.
- Very light fly fabric.
- Probably capable or taking a heck of a beating, but not without flapping in wind, sagging in snow & being cold inside.
- Nice to see quality, double ended vestibule zip. Shame it looses the (no doubt heavy) hood of the Nallo.
- High fly
- Spacious for weight (especially nice big vestibule).

I wouldn't say the're are really any faults with it. I think Hilleberg are aiming more to people owning two tents or those only using it in warmer areas, or not using it in the winter. I wouldn't buy it as a winter tent, I see it more as a tent for fair weather, but one that won't be destroyed if caught out unexpectedly in lousy weather.

Just had a look at the Hilleberg website. Anyone know why the weights of the Soulo and Nallo have been revised from 2.1kg to 2.4kg?

Not sure, but like Phil said, the weight of the anjan has also increased. Maybe a change across all Hilleberg tents?

The Nallo 3 does get more flappy than the two. We were thinking about using some Nallo 4 but (imo) three poles would be better, perhaps even for the Nallo 3 size.

I remember reading a thread about it on BPL some 6+ months ago.

On the subject of Hilleberg, if you are considering one, make sure you pack a spare toothbrush ... daily zip cleaning is required it seems

Interesting article. My anjan 3 has ykk zips, although the outer has hilleberg branding on the sliders (and a nice toggle system to lock them), the inner clearly says ykk.

Just bought an Anjan 3 from Mountain Adventure Centre (Jindabyne, NSW), eagerly awaiting it's arrival...

A little bit more expensive than buying from the US, but with the added security and service of buying within Aus.
