TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Has anyone tried these from Gumtree (Devonport)? Seems too good to be true. They've been for sale for ages, but haven't got around to checking one out. Any comments?

Oh Those
They are OK if you take another as back-up. I actually paid full retail for mine and so far ( 4 years and a second set of batteries) so good. The main problem I have with most cheap LEDs is the insistence on such small [AAA] batteries I much prefer AA or bigger such as a single Panasonic BR-C 3.6V

Why do you need one with such a high output as the batteries will not last long. But if you need high light output a quick check on ebay shows CREE LED 5 Watt 300Lm Zoomable Headlamp can be bought for under $10.

This is a very good point if the light in question is in fact a single mode 270lm.

That was my point about the small battery size assuming the heatsinking is sufficient for the output. I find nothing is I own bright enough sometimes, aircraft searchlights perhaps when looking for holes and cracks in a hillside snow and ice cover, that's why my first headlamp was the Mega

Honestly why would you bother.
I have a Black Diamond Icon, 200 Lumens with 4 AAs in a waterproof compartment.
A tidy unit that lights up the night sky.

Thanks for all your thoughts. Sorry I forgot to give the link  (thanks, Strider)

I've been thinking about getting a brighter head torch - my old one is very hard to walk by if the need arises. It's fine to cook by and around camp, but it's not even that useful going to the vegie patch at home if I forget something I need for tea.

As I'm trying hard to cut a few kgs from my pack weight, I was looking for one with AAA batteries. I'd been planning on buying a $90ish one, then wondered if it would be any better than a cheap one. A bit more to consider now.

What is lighter, 3xAAA or 1xAA?

If you're trying to cut packweight there is quite possibly larger items where it will be much easier to lose weight than a headtorch.

That said, if you want a new headtorch you might as well lighten up while you're at it!
