Just thought I'd let you know that today Aldi are selling rain jackets and pants for $15 each piece. Blue or black. Not top end but I'm sure they are OK for occasional use.

Thanks, David. Picked up a pair for taking young 'uns who don't have them - better than some garage sale overpants I have. Doesn't matter if they sweat - will keep the wind/snow/hypothermia out.

I also got a spare pair of fleece 'ears' for $4, and a thin fleece jacket layer for $7. Passed on the $79 ??goretex equivalent, but was very tempted... Anybody tried those jackets? Sold with removable padded synthetic-of-some-kind vest.

I had a look at the stuff yesterday in the Sth Melbourne Aldi.
The rain gear looks fine to me. The top (smock style) is not all that different from many that sell at or over $100.
No doubt the pants will be clammy but light,pack small and very cheap ($15).
Not bushbashing grade but not flimsy either.
I bought one of those fleece tops ($7 !) and so did my wife.
Feels fine.

is not waterproof... its water resistant only
you want closer to 10k ideally for storm proof.
when you get below about 6k definitely not waterproof...

Someone gets screwed to make these prices available to first world consumers. Opt out of the race to the bottom .

And to hit targets factories look for savings elsewhere, and safety for workers is compromised. Boycott discount chains that care little about triple bottom line reporting. Our obsession with paying next to nothing actually costs others everything.

Had a look at this jacket today. Its not the one you listed wayno (they also have them there). Its 20k 20k rated, kinda resembles the marmot mica jackets in colour (blue with those sticky reinforcing patches yet a heavier fabric). Comes with a matching primaloft vest which is quite thin and light weight. Id say a good buy for the 49 bucks. All seams were heat sealed, wp zips etc. I actually considered grabbing it but I really dont need to add to my collection of three goretex hiking jackets and five ski/boarding jackets. My hubby would be proud lol

yeah but if the material is so good then someone is getting paid peanuts to make the gear and possibly in dangerous conditions.

The 20k/20k rated Jacket and Vest is weighty but very robust. I grabbed one for a mate to use in Rogaines.
They are pretty decent, huge pit zips and the removable "primaloft" vest is nice. I think off mermory the jacket was about 650g and the vest 300g in Medium.
