TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Aldi items 20th Jul 2013

Postby David M » Sat 13 Jul, 2013 10:58 am

I was just at Aldi and saw a poster for items 20th July. Included were a down sleeping bag (80% down 20% feather, 1.2 kg), down jackets ($50) and I think some boots and some other outdoor items. I didn't take that much notice as I thought I'd come home and check online but they have not appeared there yet. Just giving advanced notice if anyone is interested.

The sleeping bag weighs 1.2kg's and is rated to +2.3 degrees. Should be able to get lighter but at $99 its not bad.

The jackets look pretty good and there are also some Marino Thermals for $29.95

Can someone comment on the hiking boots? are they good or not? I'm starting out and am in need of some boots. for $40 it's a bit hard to pass up on these ones.

I have a few pairs of the Merino thermals from a few weeks ago and they are REALLY good. The brand is Crane, and they have been fantastic. I also got a pair of WPB bib pants from their ski gear as they were discounted to $30 and are unbelievable for the price.
I think the sleeping bags would be pretty average - but the down jackets for the price would probably be ok, although I dare say they would be heavy.
But just like their skiwear , I think you get what you pay for with ALDI and for the price their stuff is fine.

I bought one of the tents and sleeping bags last year, and while they are generally only used for car camping in mild conditions, they have held up extremely well. The tent has been in heavy downpours and not let a drop in and seems to be very well made. I'm considering buying a second one so I get a spare set of poles pegs fly etc! The sleeping bag is warm. Too warm for me usually! Once again only really used in mild conditions, although was used one night in ~1 degree overnight conditions near Lithgow.

I will be picking up one of their jackets this year.

For anyone who is interested I went out and bought a sleeping bag, hiking boots and sleeping mat today from Aldi, here are my quick initial thoughts.

Sleeping bag $99: Couldn't beat it for that kind of money, its down and it feels warm! comes with a compression bag too which I didn't think it would. it feels quality made. has a little hidden pocket inside too for documents/phone/torch too.

Hiking Boots $35: Lightweight and comfortable. again surprised by the quality. I thought they were going to be big and bulky. But these will do the trick for me. (I weighed them and one shoe came in at 477g, not sure if they really is lightweight but it feels it.

Sleeping Mat $30: I though for this price it would be bad quality. but its fully bonded PVC that expands up to 5cms. I haven't laid on it yet because its still inflating. it said for first use it could take a while and its best to leave for 6 hours to let the foam fully expand. weighs just over 1 kg

I almost go the tent as well. If its of same quality as the others, I may get it later on.

I didn't see the GPS there but I am interested in seeing how it performs too

Ill give a full run down when I get some time to go through the items a bit more.

I picked up a down jacket this morning. Just a shade over 500 grams for a large.

Got a jacket (glad I turned up on opening) tent and bag (needed a spare for the wife). Im going to set the tent up today to check it out but very light and compact. Bag is actually pretty good for the price but will need feild testing. Jacket very light but my impression is I wouldnt use it through scrub as it seems like its easily ripped. But would be good at night.

Totally agree with turning up at opening - I was there are 9.15, and the jackets were going fast. All sorts of non-bushwalkers grabbing them.

Not sure why you would be wearing a down jacket while walking, scrub or no scrub. They are just way too warm for use while moving - put them on when you stop.

there was a line when i got there and they all made a beeline for the jackets. i was hearing blokes looking for my size (XL) so i went to the other side and found a buried one :) very lucky indeed there was about 30 people right on 8:30.

I'll also add i set up the tent today in the yard and am genuinely impressed. For the price you couldnt beat it. Lightweight poles and pegs, the main mesh tent itself is unbelievably light and only tips over 2kg with the fly (with very handy vesibules). Very easily will sleep too people and I can actually lie straight in it without touching the ends!

Well last weeks aldi sale had some outdoors stuff although most was rubbish (I missed the drybags which I wanted though) but today while passing through they had more of the "ultralight" sleeping bags back, which I also missed last week. For $20 it seems an alright summer bag (comfort 13.5 degrees) nice and compact, not sure of the weight but im guessing maybe 800gms to 1kg (note im not good at weight guessing lol) but its about half the weight and size of my normal bag, so now I should be able to easily use my 40l pack for warm overnighters at least :)
