TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Dressing for the cold from a Canadian perspective.
The author makes some good points about using multiple layers of lightweight windproof insulation in the same manner as Andy Kirkpatrick

Excellent little piece.1989-not that old. Not it's purpose but myth busting is a pleasure to read. A simple, independent explanation of "wicking" on page 8.

Total nonsense re. wicking and cotton. Is he really advocating cotton underwear for hiking? Wicking doesn't occur through absorption it occurs through capillary action. Cotton (and wool) retains water and takes ages to dry out. Synthetic fibres don't retain as much water and transfer (wick) it more effectively, thus drying out faster. It's false to claim that "if you sweat into cotton underwear, you have wet cotton underwear. If you sweat into polypropylene underwear, you have wet polypropylene underwear" because anyone who has tried it knows that the polypro stays wet for a much shorter time.
