But it seems the PHD halfbag was very short lived

I would assume from the weight of the shell it would be far too fragile to use on its own, any guesses as to how it compares with the Mont equivalent

Actually the half bag is available until 07 August

And I have spent all my money on other stuff this winter

Definitely not too fragile to use on its own. Plenty of people use 10-denier shells on their sleeping bags, myself included. As long as you are in a shelter or at least on a ground-sheet there is no issue.
