TOILETRIES....yes toiletries!

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

TOILETRIES....yes toiletries!

Postby KANANGRABOYD » Sat 17 Aug, 2013 9:59 pm

First of all...... I have not searched back through this on the site so if has been done before then fine....end of story.
I'm getting ready and packed for a 10 day trip - quasi UL.
Then I thought - " let's see what everyone else packs for - TOILETRIES!!!!!!!!!"
Below is what I have set aside and going to take for a 10 day trip into the Blue Mountains this week and next - 10 days in total. As you can see 175gms total.
Also obviously is a dunny roll ( yes I weighed it at 104gms), and also a STS packtowel. Also sometimes I take a few "pour Les Bebes" - lol baby wipes when in Canada they always have the French spelling and so we got to calling them POUR LES BEBES....hahahah
I also have a NEMO HELIO SHOWER - that I used for a few trip - an AWESOME piece of gear, but the connection between foot-pump and hose split so I'm in process of getting a new one under warrantee.
complete.jpg
all my items for a hygienic 10 day trip

stuff on scales.jpg
175gms total

I would be interested and love to see in pics what everyone else takes for a week long or even ANY trip out hiking as far as toiletries go
Note: I do not need to see dentures, or false teeth etc. Just regular items...hahahah actually maybe I DO want to see those bizarre items!
Cheers,

Hey Scotty,
Yes you can do without, but when you start gettin ye olde and the scurvy sets in
a few grams of mouthwash goes a long way.
Also you never know who you might meet?!!- that's a funny story as another member and I came across a "nubile" princess totally naked and "frolicking" in a stream one time.......( true story!)
Thank God my wife doesn't read this............lol

Well it was actually at the crossing of Kanangra creek, when you are walking from the Cox's crossing at the base of Yellow Pup and you walk towards Konangaroo Homestead. We were walking back to Yellow Pup crossing , and just "playing" with herself in the stream totally naked was this woman - it was crazy. Another Bushwalk member was with me and he can verify this - totally bizarre, and crazy.
Dental Hygiene is paramount to me - hahaha even though I take tonnes of Aldi $1 chocky with me!

That's hilarious!
I'll be heading out for a 4 week thru hike next month and this is what I'll take;
Soap
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Disposable razor
Squeeze tube of shave cream
Face cloth for wiping down
Small section of micro towel for drying
Oh and toilet paper which I just remembered, not sure how much that weighs?
About 250 grams I think, without toilet paper?
I don't think a photo of my toiletries is going to be very inspiring? I don't have anything exciting like mouthwash, and, is that underarm deodorant I see? Two tubes!!! :D You did say 10 days right? :D

Comb
25ml roll on deodorant
20g toothpaste
toothbrush
baby wipes
All kept in a ziplock bag.
Toilet paper and panty liners (being a female)

I don't usually take it but dental floss is good and you can also use it for sewing up packs and other broken things as it is so strong.

I also don't take a towel instead I have a bandana that is enough to dry with and if needed and also forms a good sling, bandage and other multi uses.

Toothbrush 10g
Toothpaste 25g (dentists sample)
Jif towel 15g Works as towel, wipes away condensation on the tent, grabs hot pots
Hand sanitiser 10g repackaged
Toilet paper 30g packed with hand sanitiser in a separate zip top bag
Total 90g
For longer trips
Foot cream 20g used every 1 or 2 nights - 1st aid?
TP of course increases with trip length

No soap. I find a wipe down at the end of each day with the wet jif cloth suffices.

Good tip with the Jif towel Mark, are they durable enough to last for a few weeks?

The jif towels last for weeks of walking. I think my current one has at least 50 days under it's belt but it will be retired soon. After each trip I throw it in the washing machine. You can dry yourself completely with one - it will need to be wrung out a couple of times and obviously not as nice as a big fluffy towel.

Yes these cloths are good. I cut them in half to use. I have one that doubles as my washing up cloth for dishes, wipes down my tent if needed, clean the tent floor etc. And yes they last for ages and wash up well in the machine each trip.

My toilet kit includes a lighter for burning toilet paper after use which is a tip I picked up on another site.

Isn't this method frowned upon these days? The risk of starting a bushfire is just too great, and its certainly not an option where fires are not permitted.

It's actually forbidden in the national parks in California, not because of fire danger but because it is nearly impossible to burn it completely. It ends up as abandoned trash.

But doesn't it end up as "abandoned trash" anyway? How many people dispose of their solid waste properly? Very few, I would say.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.

The regulation in the parks (and I think in the wilderness areas outside the parks) in CA is that you must pack out all trash including toilet paper. So it ends up in a trash can at the trailhead or back home. When people bury their t.p. animals often dig it up and it ends up blowing around in the wind. A similar thing happens when it isn't fully burned. Toilet paper can take quite some time to biodegrade.

I don't know what the complience percentage is for burying human waste 15cm deep. People don't dig that far down sometimes and in popular places there can be a problem. But the soils here usually aren't as difficult as those in Tasmania and the terrain makes it easier to roam. So for the most part waste does get buried adequately, at least that's my perception.

I used to burn my toilet paper. I'd get out my lighter and find a little stick and I'd sit there stirring the embers, trying to keep it burning, all while inhaling an unpleasant smoke. It never really worked that well and I'd have to pick up the charred, stinky, sticky remains and/or leave a small mess behind. It's so much easier to just pop it into a ziplock.

Sure am very selective about where/when I might do this. Recently mostly on kayak trips where fire risk is minimal.

But seriously - you're not in a gym - nobody expects you to smell like a fashion model and most walkers I know would screw up their noses and consider you a pawn for trying.
I once found a massive spray deod can on trail that had fallen out of some bloke's pack.
When I caught him up he stank like a fashion shoot and was carrying the equivalent of a VW beetle on his back.

Steve,
I use the absolute minimum in toiletries. My whole reason to post was to show the UL style. Those Lynx Deodorant are 11gm $1 containers- good for 1-2 quick sprays each armpit for 5-7 days.
The Nemo Helio Shower - what an awesome bit of gear - weighs little - big on function, actually this arvo I managed to fix it so it works perfectly, still have my receipt from Paddy's in Kent St - if I need it, but if ypu are relatively static and can spare <1kg - the Helio is a fantastic bit of gear.
I personally don't give a damn how I smell however - for long hikes, having a good personal toiletries selection - which includes all the items I showed - first of all adds to morale, then to hygiene, then to panche ( or however you spell it!!!!). I am happy to carry extra mouthwash and floss - to ensure that my mouth is not a cess pit, and you never know when you will come across those nubile bushwalking princesses.....

I use the absolute minimum in toiletries. My whole reason to post was to show the UL style..

Not even close to UL style - try .... a small bottle of eucalyptus oil, chammy, toothbrush and floss. You can maintain your hygiene and smell nice with that lot. It only requires a cup of water.
This makes me the first man to climb Mount Everest backwards, without oxygen...or even a jumper.
