TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Follow-up to Hilleberg Allak purchase

Hi all,
I'm a new member that's visited this forum often in the past and picked up a few handy tips, but have never gotten around to signing up until now. First up, apologies for boring you with more queries about tents, but I'm in the market for a new 2-man and, admittedly without having seen one in the flesh, am pretty impressed with the Hilleberg Allak. Member Andrew wrote back in April that he'd recently taken delivery of a new Allak but at that stage hadn't put it to any sort of practical test, preferring his Soulo for one up trips. I think I'm right in saying that he's not as yet posted a follow up, so if Andrew or any one else is able to provide some feedback I'd appreciate it before forking over the "rather steep and getting steeper" asking price.
For background I'm a 57 year old, 1.8m tall, reasonably fit, fairly experienced ex-footballing Tassie bushwalker and have walked many of Tassie's iconic (and minor) tracks including Frenchman's, Mt Anne circuit, Western Arthurs traverse, pretty much all of the Cradle tracks, Walls, Never Never, Labyrinth, Central Plateau, Lake Rhona, Cape Huay/Pillar circuit, etc. and oh... about 50-ish training 'sprints' up the King's Rd Mt Roland track. Except for the usually solo Roland forays I always walk with a few good mates and to save weight we share tents (and scotch) - as I said, good mates! I've determined that I'm looking for a 4-season, well ventilated, dual vestibule, sturdily and cleverly fabricated, quick to pitch and pull-down (often in the rain), roomy as practicable tent that stays dry inside and weighs as little as possible without unduly compromising the foregoing. Not a big ask I wouldn't have thought! I'm suspicious that the truly light weight shelters would not be adequate in the sort of places and weather that we frequent but am happy to be convinced otherwise. Any comment would be most appreciated.
Cheers
Glenn

I think my bag of holding / tardis / Weasley tent has alsready been given out. You might be able to borrow one from another forum member.

Jokes aside, your only reach choice is a Hilleberg (strong, clever, dry, roomy and light-ish). If you want lighter and more expensive you can try Terra Nova.

If you have a couple of spare grand and want a really lightweight shelter, you can (attempt to) commission one from MLD/Zpacks and have a custom 4 season inner made too.

Lastly, ignore lines 1 and 3

Tarptent Scarp 2 and Exped Venus are also worth a look.

Thanks icefest and Strider,
I had a virtual look at both the Tarptent Scarp 2 and Exped Venus 2. Pretty impressed with both, especially the ease of pitching 'em.

However, in the meantime a PM from Tas01 inviting me to inspect his 4 week old, barely used, never been wet Allak with 10 virginal staking pegs (he'd only broken 2 in) was an invitation I found hard to refuse. So today in brilliant sunshine we built the thing in Princes Square, to be honest I think I was pre-smitten (with the tent... not Tas01), and to cut a short story even shorter the tent came home with me. When I finish this post I'm off to find a hiding place for it so that it doesn't trigger a search of recent bank transactions by the wife.

So thanks guys for taking the time to respond to my original post, I appreciate it. Though I did wonder what the hell you were doing on the forum at 1.11am icefest... then I re-read your post!!!

Cheers

How does my post make being up at 1:11am any different? Was it my spelling mistake? Was it ze unmistakeable german accent?
The actual reason was that I don't sleep much. :/
