TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Tough Scrambling Shorts? recommendation?

Postby Stonie » Tue 15 Oct, 2013 11:41 am

Hi,

I'm heading up the Western Arthurs in feb and need some new shorts... I ripped the "a*se area" out of my last pair of shorts while scrambling...
I realise that in a perfect world you shouldn't drag your bottom across rough rocks, but sometimes it's just a part of scrambling (well at least for me it is).

Can anyone on here recommend some tough shorts, zip off's or three quarter pants that will stand up to some abuse? (not cotton).

:)
Cheers,
Stonie.

I have seen some very tough shorts at a skaters mountain bikers shop. They were a bit expensive but designed to be scraped on the ground a fair bit so would do the job. you may have to do some searching on your browser.
I have considered getting some.
Other wise some of the tradie type of king Gee type of shorts may do the trick.

The best I have found are quick dry sailing shorts. They have a reinforced back side on them and are light fast drying material on the front. Most yacht decks have non skid on them that wears the back side out of shorts in not time so they are standard items for yachties in good weather.
I own a pair of these http://www.musto.com.au/marine/evolution-fast-dry- or these http://www.musto.com.au/essentials/evol ... cal-shorts (not sure exactly which one) and they are my bushwalking shorts at the moment.
Any of the other sailing brands make equivalent shorts, just go to your local marine shop and your sorted.

Could have given us a little warning Scottyk, almost had a hearter at the prices. They would want to be good.

I didn't realise they were that much either! I got them as a gift from a family member who gets them at cost price due to working in a marine shop.
I am sure that some of the other marine brands may have cheaper versions.
They certainly are a good quality item that will do a lot of work.

I purchase alot of my shorts at 2nd hand shops, usually nylon board shorts,I am always looking for subdued colours. They are cheap so there is no issue when I wear out the bum, usually get a pair for $2-$4.

I loaned one of those $1500ish jackets for an offshore race I did and yep it's a lot of money but when green water roles over the deck of a racing yacht every 5 minutes for a 4 hour stint on deck, I was very glad to have that jacket. It was an absolute bomb suit.
But yep, very expensive.

I haven't tried them, but had a look. MacPac has MTB shorts on spec at $95. Looks pretty sturdy.

Shorts for riding mountain bikes are actually a pair of shorts within a pair of shorts. The inner pair is a stretchy licra type material with a chamois pad around your crutch and bum for making riding comfortable over long distances. The outer is a loose short with a stretchy area around the bum to make it all move well when riding.
I own a couple different pairs of these and they are great for mountain biking but I couldn't imagine walking any distance in them. They feel a bit like you have a nappy on!

If you are going to take the nappy out then why buy them?

Tough shorts for walking and MTB shorts on the MTB with the nappy installed. Dual use.

MTB shorts are generally tougher than other shorts, they cop more abrasion.

Do you own a pair of mountain biking shorts?
I own several different kinds, none of them are suitable for walking long distances in, with or without the inner.
One kind has a funny kind of stretchy fabric in the crutch area that I would guess would chaff rather badly. The other types seem to be just a light quick dry material all over, not very durable for rock scrambling.
Bike saddles don't tend to wear through your shorts at all in my experience. I wear through the inner chamois pad after a long time, but I mean a long time.
They are a silly option for a pair of rock scrambling shorts

Yes, I have a pair. Built from heavy weight nylon, non-nappy style, had lots of use on and off MTB. I think they might be bulletproof (literally). :D

I see. I think I wasn't the first person to suggest MTB shorts, so I'm not sure I can agree with that statement, but Stonie has several options to look at now. Hopefully he will report back so future rock scramblers get a heads up on good shorts for the job.

Something like this?: http://www.bicyclestore.com.au/fox-attack-shorts.html

Looks similar to mine, but mine are unbranded.

I would recommend the sailing shorts - there are brands other than Musto around. Just go down to your local marina and check out the chandler, or try Whitworth's if there is one near you. $70 will get you a pair of quick dry shorts with reinforced seat and closed cell foam padding (removable).
This makes me the first man to climb Mount Everest backwards, without oxygen...or even a jumper.

Hi there again. Here is another source for tough shorts http://www.cactusequipment.co.nz/online ... -shorts/95
They are made in Christchurch NZ and are a supplier recommended by the victorian bushwalk search and rescue (BSAR). They are not too badly priced for tough shorts ranging from $120-149 NZ$$$$. Postage is $10 or $20 NZ$$ (tracked or untracked).
I may order some.
