TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

They have started getting these at work as we drink a lot of bottled water on the rig I work on so they are trying to keep the plastic waste down.
They got me thinking they would be good to take walking. You can crush them and easily blow them up again to be filled when needed. For trips where water has be carried in dry areas they would make a great alternative to bladders for those who prefer bottles. Cheap too.
I tried crushing them and then inflating them over and over and they won't leak.
I am not sure about the plastic breaking down after a while but at the price they could be thrown in the recycling away after every trip if worried about this.
Maybe people already use them and I am behind?

I've been using them for a while and love them.

Instead of using a hydration bladder I stuff one into a pant / short pocket and drink from it on the run. When I stop for breaks I refill it from my larger bottles. Nice and light, space saving when stowed, a great cheap bit of kit.

You can do them same with normal soft drink bottles too, you just need to blow a bit harder. They are a bit heavier though.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

I think that's where's the 30% reduction in plastic material came from. Thinner material.
Just move it!

These really crush down to nothing. I wish I had one with me now as I would take a pic
They end up about 4cm high including the lid when crushed end to end

If they genuinely can withstand repeated crushing and inflating they could be really good to use with the Sawyer squeeze. I'll have to go and check one out.

Edit: K I went out and bought one from the local shop to try. Not sure it's super useful for my purposes. It does crush but using it with the squeeze I could only get about half the water out. Also blowing it back up leaves it very dented and wrinkled which would reduce its capacity. Damn light though and yes no leaks after a few crushes.

Even thought it's thinner and more flexible, it's still made out of PET plastic, right? As such, they will fracture when repeatedly flexed.

Maybe but I wasn't able to.
I wouldn't keep them for too long anyway due to the plastic breaking down. Do a google search for BPA in plastic and you'll see why.

Why don't they ship in water in larger multi-use containers and issue each employee with a stainless steel type Sigg/Kleen Kanteen/Cheeki etc? I bet these companies woule love to get behind corporate use.
They could easily be personalised with company logo and the person's name etc
Then the problem of all the throw away plastic water bottles wouldn't arise.

I have watched several of those UK andd USA military shows about patrols in Afghanistan, and am astounded by the amount of disposable water bottles they bring in. When empty just seem to get discarded randomly about the place. Pretty bad IMO
I guess environmental and visual pollution is the last thing they bother to worry about
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

Would be a tad ironic if I started using them as refillables. They deplete the water table at my mountain to sell them, then I could put more original "Mount Franklin" water in them.

I agree OSM. The amount of plastic waste on this planet is scary. I am guilty too but is trying hard to minimise it. All that plastic packaging!

They do have water cooler type bottles that we refill drink bottles from.

Remember when you work in kind of heat that I work in water becomes a real safety issue. We drink upwards of 8 litres per 12 hour shift so a variety of delivery methods are called for. Out on the decks a crew member brings around sealed bottles of iced water every now and then.
It would certainly be a safety issue for the soldiers you refer to. Bottled water is sealed and safe and easy to ship. I am willing to give those guys all the plastic they want if it gives them safe water in a place like that. I will forgive them some litter also.
