Used a Kovea moonwalker on the weekend. Worked well in the wind.

I was using nearly empty gas canisters and I had to turn them upside down to use.

A bit heavy at 294gms but very stable has a gas preheat and allegedly uses less gas than the little titanium burner. Anybody else used one of these?

Where are your pics Corvus?

My favorite (and only) Is my Coleman Outlander bought second hand on ebay for under $30. Made out of proper steel and cast aluminium - none of this snobby Titanium rubbish  (Okay perhaps, just maybe I'm envious of your Kovea & Crux!) But mine works well and is nicley adjustable for about 160g.

I have a Kovea Moonwalker and have been very pleased with it. It's a great stove - very stable and performs well in all conditions. I find I use about 15g gas /L water boiled in mild/cool conditions, and about 25g/L in the snow (at ~2000m altitude). However, at 298g it is a bit on the heavy side, particularly for solo walks. I have just ordered a Kovea Supalight Titanium (60g) and will be interested to see how the two compare. I expect I'll use the Supalight for summer/solo walks, but stick to the Moonwalker for 3-4 season use.

Kovea X1 Solo. Proved reliable to date and seems economical on gas. It’s heavier than the Titanium but still reasonable at 124gms. I also use both a home made heat shield and windshield. Before this happily used a Trangia. No problem with that but too heavy and bulky for just two of us, add boiling water to bag only chefs.

A list of your stove collection would do for starters, and I am going to take this as a challenge between you and me as to which one of us has the most bushwalking stoves, I will post my list and some pics later today.

Hi Corvus

For this post I will put my stoves into three groups Commercial, cottage and MYOG and then in sub groups.

Commercial Industry
Shellite: MSR Whisperlite.

Alcohol: Trangia 27-1
Trangia Mini

The Trangia 27-1 is a great ultra reliable stove, but is heavy and bulky

Gas canister: 2 x MSR Pocket Rocket
Kovea Eagle modified
JetBoil with GCS pot and 2 x PCS pots
Coleman extreme

This group contains two of my favourite stoves, The Kovea eagle is which has been modified is one of my favourite summer stoves and the Coleman Xtreme is a top winter performer.

Cottage Industry
Alcohol: White Box
Furylite
Colbolt
Starlyte old
Starlyet new
Gram weenie
Caldera cone for BPL 550 pot with 12-10 stove burner

At 8.5g the Gram Weenie is a great little stove and is the only cottage alcohol stove that I have used in the field.

MYOG
Alcohol 3.5 gram side burner
Gram weenie copy
Blast furnace (side burner copy)
Volcano (my own design)
Central flue stove

The Volcano stove that I designed is would be my favourite in this group, it is the most efficient alcohol stove that I have tested yet.

Gas canister: SUUL stove
½ oz upright stove
Double pocket Rocket
Side feed stove

Total 23 stoves, this does not include many MYOG prototypes that I have sitting arround my shed.

The SUUL stove would be my top favourite of all stoves as it can take several different types of canisters, is lightweight and works in very cold conditions.

MYOG SUUL stove

MYOG 14.2g upright

That is why I joined BW-T(A) to get help.

There are some stove tragics groups out there which I use for therapy http://www.bplite.com and http://www.backpackinglight.com (myog thread) to name two.

G'Day Tony
As a machinist by trade and these days an engineer and also a chronic DIYer (even if it goes against all common logic and economic sense) I have followed and appreciated your work for quite a while over a few forums.
Unfortunately my many, many diverse interests absorb so much time my stove ideas stay just that.
So keep up the good work

G'day Tony,
Thank you for that if my Son was still at home I think we could have surpassed your total as we had a competition going on all sorts of DIY can stoves none of which were perfect but we had a ball drinking /eating the contents and discovering which windshield/pot stand was most effective (Son is a Fine Arts Graduate specialising in Sculpture ) so you well may imagine his efforts (BTW he now uses a real burner as he calls it ) Firing and Driving the ABT Steam Locos on the WCWR.

Does anyone know the true mass of the Kovea titanium stove? The website lists the superlight at 60g, and the Titanium stove at 340g. For me the Titanium Stove would be more practical with the built in ignition, but 340g doesn't sound right.

Luke ,
As previously posted the TKB-0101 on "coin tested" digital scales weighs 95 g -if you add the hard case it is 132g in total (sorry I did not get the LW bag with mine so I cant give you that weight) but you could contact the Aus importer or just visit you local gear shop for that info.
Hope that helps.

The Trangia has been and probably always will be my fave. Trustworthy and reliable. Sure it's slow, but hey, I didn't head into the wilderness for a quick cuppa or a quick bite to eat. Good contemplation time. And quiet too.

I,m a trangia lover and always have been. Did try the MSR Simmerlite for a while But just did'nt cut it for me.

I also have the Kovea TKB-1010 and as a fly in fly out system I think it,s great. But as an "Iron Chef" type, who loves cooking outdoors, IMHO you can't beat the gas conversion Trangia 27-5.

I did a test the other day on boiling a cup of water with both systems: TKB-1010 boiled in 2.01min and the 27-5 in 1.53min. Sure the 27-5 is heavier, but the extra 800 odd grams for me is easy wieght when the end result can be a three course meal. Seems you are always the envy of all if you can pull this off.

My Trangia 27 has given me years of faithful service. I've only just recently replaced the burner, the rest is pretty dinged up, but works fine.

I also have the MSR Windpro (gas version of the Simmerlite) which I'm currently using with a single Trangia pot as lightweight option when I'm by myself. The whole kit (without gas, with heat reflector and windscreen) is about 450gms and fits into the bag that came with the stove. I could have gotten a lighter stove, but I like the stability of the Windpro.

I could not resist adding to this thread with a photo of my " Borde 'Bomb' " shellite stove I purchased in 1968. It has served me well for 41 years of bushwalking (crikey am I that old!) . It is very compact - 25mm diameter and 125mm long and weighs 300 grams empty. I still have the instruction sheet and it claimed that it's efficiency was such that 1 litre of shellite would boil 80 litres of water! WIth the method of lighting it likely to drop burning fuel, it is definitely not one that can be used inside a modern synthetic fabric tent. The "BOMB nickname came from the stove's lack of a pressure release valve, which meant that as the temperature of the stove increases, the flame needs to be throttled back otherwise it will eventually explode if left unsupervised. The steadily increasing "ROAR" of the burner has conditioned my salivary glands to prepare for FOOD!

I have a wisperlite Internationale which runs on kero or shellite. It's a great stove and completely field strippable should any problem arise.Big plus is minimal fuel useage for long trips.Minus is lack of good simmer adjustment.
My current favourite is a Kovea Titanium which is superlite at 85 grams plus about 5gms for stuffsack. Fantastic convenience with piezo ignition and total heat control. Brilliant. :D Not that pricey either.

A brass Svea Climber ... approaching antique status and not much used now. Replaced with a Sigg Firejet which is no longer made. Spare parts are available from a UK firm though.

Ditto mine but at around 500g it stays on the shelf now unless son and me are on a nostalgia thing

Happy with my Kovea X1 solo and my MSR Pocket Rocket.

Both compact and do the job quite easily. The Kovea puts out a more direct heat so get used primarily for cooking, the Pocket Rocket is the billy boiler...

Never had the need to worry about titanium, etc... In a previous life I was a camel...
