TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Aarn pack and where to put the tent

Postby onward » Tue 08 Sep, 2015 10:01 pm

I have just started using an Aarn Featherlight Freedom pack, but I am lost where to put a wet tent! Normally I would put it at the bottom of my pack, then the liner on top, but with the Aarn the liner is built in. I just spent a couple of days with it strapped to the side, however that pulls the pack completely off balance (which sort of defeats the object of getting an Aarn pack) and it doesn't have any bottom tie points. What do others do with a wet tent?
Thanks
Martin

Good question. I am currently thinking that outside the Pack, maybe have the poles in bottom of pack, but that would depend on which pack, tent combination you took.
Keeping the tent outside the pack gives the advantage of having it first hand to set it up, and wet repacks wouldn't be so disastrous.
I am thinking the same things with my setup.

Undo the liner from the throat of the pack and twist/fold it over. Put tent on top and roll throat as usual.

If it's anything like our Aarn packs, the waterproof liner can be pulled off the velcro at the opening. Wet tent can certainly be placed to the outside of the liner but wholly within the pack. Otherwise there are solutions to strap it to the top or back of the pack. As long as the weight is evenly distributed, it's fine. If it's dragging to the back, then strap it tighter and load more of the weight into the balance pockets.
Just move it!

I do one of three things
either put a wet outer tent in the front balance pockets with the inner inside the pack
inner in pack with outer tucked in the rear outside pocket
velcro liner pulled and rolled down as others have mentioned. Not a fan of this

Usually though the first option is the one. I put the wet tent tent in the front pocket (its weighty for size) and pack in other heavy stuff on top of it filling the pocket. My pegs are always in the front pockets. Depending on which tent I take the poles are inside the pack against the spine or in the side pocket wedged forward. This way packs down well filling spce nicely and maintains optimum waterproofing.

Do a search on how to load your pack. The tent doesn't usually go to the bottom as you want lighter things there. Also you don't want to have to totally unpack your whole pack out in the weather to get to your tent.

This is what I do. Usually the inner is separated (as it is normally dry) and stored in the dry bag, but the wet fly is packed like this. You have to organise how you pack the rest of the gear to keep it neat, but it works very well.

Packed except for the wet tent - and you can see how the velcro attaches the dry bag.

Pack outer separated from dry bag.

Use a light dry bag for the wet tent (or just the fly), instead of the regular stuff sack. There's a tiny weight penalty but you can pack the tent anywhere you like inside without wetting anything else
