MSR Hubba Hubba Nx 2-person vs. Tarptent Scarp 2

Hello,

I'm looking to buy my first 2-person tent that I can use for multi-day walks throughout most of the year in Australia. From what I've read on the internet I've come down to two options: (1) MSR Hubba Hubba Nx 2-person tent, and (2) Tarptent Scarp 2. On snowys.com.au, the MSR goes for about $570 with free delivery; the Scarp 2 without any additions costs US$369+US$80 delivery, or about AUD$625.

I was wondering what other people think about the two tents I just mentioned. And is it worth purchasing the Tarptent add-ons?

Thanks,
David

The Scarp is a good tent (I own one) but I wouldn't say its worth paying more for than the MSR. The MSR is almost guaranteed to have better build quality.

Do you actually want to sleep two people, or are you just after a bit of extra space? What about the One Planet Goondie range?

Thanks for your comment Strider. I plan to sleep 2 people in the 2 person tent.

This is my first time hearing about One Planet. How does it compare to the MSR and Tarp? There isn't a whole lot about it on the internet.

One Planet tents are probably on par for quality with MSR. Design is good, dual vestibules and dual entrances, good strong floors. The Goondie 2 is too small for two people but the Goondie 3 might suit - I haven't seen the latter in the flesh.

Thanks for hopping on the Snowys site and checking out the MSR, David. Beaut tent. Have you checked out theMont Moondance 2?

If you're a stickler for weight, out of the MSR and Mont, the MSR is the way to go - though there is only ~20g in it, really. If durability is the key, the Mont has the upper hand I reckon. As for price, the Mont will free up $50.

I reckon you'd be happy with both :)

I haven't got the Scarp 2, but I recently bought the Hubba Hubba NX, after having the Luxe Habitat knock off for 5 years. I think the Hubba Hubba NX is great as it is really good having two doors for two people, everything goes up easily together and it is not hard to get it pitched right. There are lots of useful details on the tent that show how much thought went into it, like the tensioners at each corner and for the vestibules. I suppose that it is not too surprising considering that MSR have been making and upgrading versions of this for over a decade (I think a decade, don't quote me). Honestly though there are things I wish MSR would do more with, such as having more guy out points for stability, but the whole package is pretty good. From what I've seen there are mixed feelings about the grey outer fly, I like it because of the spacious feeling, but I know you can also purchase it in green if that is not your thing.

The Scarp can be made into a 4 season tent with crossing poles, is that right? That might be something work thinking about as an option if you plan to go hiking in winter. The Hubba Hubba NX cannot do this, but for every other season it is great.

Getting back to the first thing I said though, I think either would be a great purchase and that you would be happy with either tent.

There is a Moondance 2 in the for sale section, hardly used. No point buying new if you don't have to!

**EDIT**

Bugger it's already sold :(

Hi David
All the tents mentioner here are good items.
The Mont and Goondies are a little bit heavier but also more robust.
It depends where you plan to be using your tent.

Agreed. I'm actually looking at replacing my little DMH 1-person that I paid, I think, $99 for 9 years ago. For a cheap tent, it's actually done marvelously well. I'm probably going to go durability (Mont Moondance 1) over weight (it's 20 gram difference). And hey, it means I can support an Aussie brand and all that.

Thanks for all your comments.

I'm weighing up between the MSR and Mont now. What I gather is that it largely comes down to weight vs. durability, with the Moondance being ~$60 cheaper.

It's a pity that the Moondance 2 was sold!

Would have been a score, that secondhand Moondance 2!

I've asked a few guys here in the store and they all say Mont. (I'm sold on the Moondance 1 for myself.)

I've had the Moondance 2 for 4 years or so and think it's a great tent, although at times I hanker for something lighter. I use the Moondance when sharing with my partner (not exactly spacious for 2 but then most 2 person tents aren't). I've recently started using a lightweight tarp setup when it's just me, but I'd still take the Moondance if expecting nasty weather.

I'm also a big fan of One Planet gear. I understand that the Goondie gives you a few more options with different fabric weights and different inners available. With a nylon inner it's a 4 season tent.

You're right. Both the Goondie 1 and 2 come with 4 different fly/mesh options, from 15D fly / mesh inner, to 30D / nylon inner. The 3 comes with two options.
