TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Uniqlo down coats

Postby Moondog55 » Fri 01 Jan, 2016 11:01 am

The Uniqlo down coats are back in store but the biggest is XL and while their sizing says it fits my chest size i know from buying them that they are a size or two smaller than that
If anybody buys one of the coats could they please do a critique fast while thy have the sizes available I don't think I can get to the store to try one on and these seem to sell out very quickly

Does anyone have experience with their down vests. Very interested in getting one but I'm a little unsure about sizing and quality.

Quality is good, sizing is small; I always go up 1 or 2 sizes
Kids parka went on sale / arrived last month sand sold out already
If you get the biggest vest you can it will fit under or over

As md says the quality is good - better than other down vests at far more money. I have a L whereas I am usually a M in shirts, so size up.

Thanks MD and Mark for that info, it appears that sizing is the main issue.

Mark I agree on pricing, gosh the pricing point on what is largely the same product is incredible and I haven't found anything I like. To bulky and not a nice fit.

I see they have a shop in Brisbane which I wasn't expecting so I'm going to call in on Saturday.

Went to the store today and picked up a down vest. XL fitted perfectly and I can layer over the top with its snug fit.

Very happy with the quality as well and I actually went through their racks of down coats as well looking for poor stitching, down migration or bad zippers and there was nothing bad at all. Highly recommend people check them out as I have been pleasantly surprised.

Their down vests are fantastic. I ditched my high loft down vest (440g) on my AAWT trip in November and swap did for a Uniqlo vest at 136g - toasty all the time, and packs to nothing.

I just received my uniqlo ultralight down vest (146g) to replace my fleece vest (273g).

Was concerned about comments re sizing on BW.com, but decided to follow the website measurements.

Sizing is perfect. I'm a 60kg 6' male. Their site recommended small based on my measurments, and it is spot on for size.

Definitely warm enough - and probably at least equal to my fleece which it replaces. Pockets are good. Zips are good. Storage pouch is excellent.

Sewing quality is excellent. Material feels fantastic and soft. Havent tried the DWR properties, and don't intend to. No down smell, or protruding feathers. Delivery was fast.

I'm very impressed for $59 on sale with free postage. Sure, you can get better and more technical ultralight down gear. But you can't match the value.

Any info on where and how their down is sourced?
I've seen some horror utube clips on the net

Following a fashion model of creating classic styles that would stand long fashion cycles, Uniqlo’s basic down jackets are mainstream in many cities across the globe.

While Uniqlo’s parent company, Fast Retailing, doesn’t specify how its down is collected, its 2013 report (pdf) says that it “respects the rights of animals, and employs a range of strategies that animals are not harmed at certain stages of procurement and production.”

Uniqlo tells Quartz via email that its suppliers are required to sign an agreement to not use down from live-plucked, force-fed birds and the company’s corporate social responsibility (pdf) sourcing team visits suppliers to make sure they follow the agreement.

For the girls that want a "Proper" length of coat for the after walk sit down this long line might be OK

And around town or as a liner this flight jacket type would work for me

Bought one of the jackets recently. Sized down to a small + it fits good, reasonably warm. Going to try and attach some elastic cuffs and a shock cord round the bottom.
