The eTrex 10 does have everything the old 72 does. The menu system is a bit different from the old one, but it can do what you need if you don't need maps.
It must the poor exchange rate these days, but I've seen the eTrex 10 go up in price recently. It used to hover around the $100 mark, but now I've seen it around for $130-$150.
Alternatively, you can get a cheap Android phone with GPS and use various apps (with a water proof case and USB battery pack for extra life). Using Oruxmaps for example on Android it is quite easy to mark waypoints, and you can have a detailed map as well. And if you don't leave it logging tracks and just use it for marking waypoints, it is quite battery efficient.
