TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

For those who do multi-day hikes, what is the capacity and weight(the pack itself, not contents) of the largest pack you utlise?

The pack I use the most is 40L and 800g.
I have lighter, smaller, bigger and heavier packs but this one gets the most use.

Black Wolf Mountain Ash 65L backpack that weighs 2.1kg. Gets used for pretty much anything from overnighters upwards.
Also got a Berghaus 35+8L (1.6kg) backpack that can (just) fit my gear for an overnighter without the 'expansion pockets', but mostly only gets used if I'm going to a camping cave or hut without a tent.

Neither are remotely lightweight, but have survived a lot of abuse.

An old Lowe 65L pack. 2.2kg. It does everything I need, and it just won't wear out (I've had it for maybe 20 years). It's excellent apart from the weight.

I do hope to try a sub-1kg pack soon though.

Sorry for the digression tekker-
hey crolly, did you realise that if you classify your WT Sonder, as does Osprey, I believe it is actually closer to a 30L rucksack?
Osprey uses the "industry standard" (sectionhiker) and only counts closed cavities, with a lid or zippered apparently so that 48l is the main body plus the lid compartment mainly, your Sonder is actually, on industry standard about 30L i.e. what Dan measures as the main body (which has some room for extension). So the exos 48 (2018) is actually 59L. (outdoorgearlab).
"OGL Measured Volume Bottom Line:
Total Volume = 59L
Main Bag = 40L
Front Pocket = 5L
Side Pockets = 5L
Removable Lid = 6L".

I am not saying this is negative or positive, just trying to compare apples with apples.
As the happy owner of a WT sack, I am very impressed with mine. Very!

Z Packs Arc Blast 55 litre and around 600g is the go to.

Macpac Torre - 90ltr - 3.4 kg for most walks.

I have done single nights with an Osprey Kestrel - 48 ltr - 1.6 kg, but found that difficult.

This thread is pretty upsetting.

Golite went broke in 2014. I note that there is a rebirth - but clothing only at this stage by the look of it :(. A real shame as I really would like to have had a Golite eden tent. There may be hope yet.

One Planet WBA 65l current version ~2kg, I thought mine (2014 ver) was slightly less.

Use it for everything bar day trips from home.

I noticed early versions of the Sonder were advertised as 30L and was wondering why Dan had changed the pack size but given it the same name! That explains why, he has changed the way he measures the volume.

Also the Osprey Exos actually varies in volume depending on if it is small, medium or large with the largest size being 2L bigger in the main compartment.

So I guess volume really is just a guide not definative.

I like the way Dan does it-there is no artifice. He tells you what you are getting in each of the compartments that you might use-perfect!
Easy to plan your use of the available space. ( I knew I could get 2 cleanse bottles in each side of my Luxmore by his specs for example).
This is why the Ospreys always seem to be "larger" than what people expect-because they don't include in their advertised "measurements" the back pocket and the water bottle pockets.
