TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Any beret wearers here?

I cut my hair again over the week-end. My beloved said I was looking "ratty" and my head was cold. Pulled out an old scout beret that was a substitute for my own that went missing [ my brother borrowed for a reunion and it went walkabout] and I was reminded of how warm and practical a proper felted wool beret can be

Sorry, Moondog, I hate berets with a passion!
:)

I was forced to wear one for a while and they make my big ears stick out even further.

The only benefit I can see is that you can roll them up and stick them in your pocket when you're not wearing them.

I've recently started wearing an Akubra while hiking and much prefer it. Better sun protection all round plus keeps the rain out of your eyes.
I also carry a beanie for night and/or really cold days.

Maybe it is because I have worn them most of my working life, I really hate the stupid French toque in working kitchens and much prefer the English cap.

My head froze this morning. I'd try one.
I like the look of jaunty insouciance they project as well.

I wore one for a while when I was in the army; they provide little protection from the sun and are less warm than a beanie. Apart from that i would say that they are pretty useful.

I wish I could do that with my big ears.

I'm another who, for a time, wore one provided by the taxpayer. Black with a nice metal badge.

As others have said, useless for keeping the weather off one's face.

I have developed a liking for the UK flat caps, NOT the US variant. The brim on the UK ones provides a little protection (not much ) from rain, and sun ? UK ? Nice compromise in warmth between a full on beanie and a cotton cap.

The US versions seem to be an upholstered ball cap, and look like they would be more prone being blown off. Myth says that that UK version originated in Yorkshire, where something that is easily blown off would not be a success.

You got a real metal badge? Mine was cheap plastic with shiny paint. Actually my first cap badges were gunmetal but we had to hand those back in and we got the *&%$#! placky ones to replace them, but at least those didn't need to be polished.
I was looking on eBay and the bronze ones are starting to fetch big money

I'm 99% sure they were metal. I like to think I would have picked up on it if not. If one pops up in my junk somewhere, I'll check

I am older than you, ya know :D
