Bushwalk Australia

Howdy all,

I'm trying to find (in Australia -- thanks pandemic for making international mail so slow!) hiking clothing for big & tall men. I've tried a few sites I could find and they don't have my size (46 pants, probably xxl shirt). I fear I'm going to have to order from the US but was hopeful someone would know a good place in Australia!

Where are you based?

Newcastle, NSW. Happy to buy online but prefer if it's in Australia.

'Low drag onshore' shirts at BCF are huge. Nylon and excellent. Good in all weather.

182 grams before the Nikwax which I will do tomorrow
The winter ones will be red, and maybe yellow as well

Also try Mountain Warehouse; they do mens clothes to 5XL although not much choice in the larger sizes

They go really well with the purple, black and ecru camouflage leggings I made for him to ski in a few years ago

Basic simple stuff is quick and easy. When you start adding zips, velcro, pocket flaps, bagged and double knees it gets a lot more complex.

I'm a bigger lad (6'2", 54" chest, 42" waist) and struggle to find bushwalking gear. Maybe not struggle but limited for choice.
Fishing shirts come in big sizes for sure but I find them a clammy unless you're wearing a baselayer.
Australian made Wilderness Wear [url]wildernesswear.com.au[/url] make larger baselayer clothing, a US XXL is around a 5XL, so check the sizing before buying.
Many of the US brands make larger sizes but very had to find here. Columbia import larger sizes and I like their Silver Ridge range.
Mountain Designs used to but not any more. I've had luck with North Face, Kuhl and Kathmandu as well. And Ard'teryx which surprised me but maybe not as much as the price
There is other stuff but you have to visit the shops and see what they have, Paddy's and Adventure Mega Store always has at least a few articles that are larger, most other stores like Mountain Equipement, never.

If you want to wait and buy OS.
Enlightened Equipment has some really nice gear that will fit.
Zpacks Vertice rain jacket may or may not fit but nice expensive and UL.

MD or Cecile-do you reckon about 2-5 CFM on the taslanated nylon?
Hey Crolly I can guarantee you a slab of sherbets the shirt I linked is not clammy! It is not the same as most other fishing shirts. I own three now. Soft as a babies khyber.

I'd have to say 2 to 3 filter papers so in the range 5 to 8CFM. I haven't yet Nikwaxed them but that doesn't usually change the wind resistance much. They feel more resistant than the USMC snow camouflage I normally use
I withdraw that statement as I just checked the surplus, while they might "feel" different the effort needed to pull air through them is the same. The surplus are heavier due to all the pockets and zippers

My partner who is 6'6" and size XXXL, has a couple of pairs of Explorer 360 zip-off pants which I bought from BCF a couple of years back for around $60 each. The brand doesn't seem to appear on their website any more, but could be worth a visit to your local store. They have an elastic waist with button & fly, and all the usual zip pockets etc.

Macpac make a few items in XXXL but the sizing varies a little. I think they have plenty of stuff in XXL.

You'll find odd bits and pieces in Aussie Disposals in larger sizes.

I've been told that Columbia sizes tend to be a bit larger, so their gear may suit.

Many cheaper brands make their larger sizes wider, but don't add corresponding length.

Nikwax added 20 grams and part of that might still be water as they are still a tiny bit damp, hasn't altered the look or feel either

Hi Lamont, checked out that BCF fishing shirt and it's a lot different to the run of the mill fishing shirt, it's even got a bit of tailoring to it! If I see it on special, I might get one. Cheers.

I just missed one for 30 bucks on special at BCF -was the army green and I dithered-went back and it was gone! I cut the front and back 'tails' off and hemmed two of my shirts for summer use. Still enough to tuck them in left over. I left a nice 'Western Bulldogs or Footscray blue' coloured one with the tails on for colder weather -for the deep tuck. Also had to shift the neck button a bit to make it looser and cut off the silly sleeve holder things. Looks basically like a normal shirt now.
