It's not good for footwear to be left on the shelf for long periods. Regular wear keeps them healthier.

Gee Commando, I think that is three pairs of boot now and I am starting to wonder if the problem could be your commando feet? You say they rotted out from the inside so maybe apply a liberal dose of toot powder in future.

How long was it since you last used these boots? I have these boots and they have not shown any sign of "rotting". However, it is well known that the material from which the soles are made will degrade if the boots aren't worn for a long time. Drying the boots out by putting them near a campfire could well cause the soles to degrade.
