TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Short Explorer Socks

Mon 12 Apr, 2010 4:27 pm

Hey all,

a few years ago i owned a couple of pairs of socks, that were made in the same style as the explorer type (good thick darned type, the typical bushwalker sock), only they were short, like the low-cut, just covering the ankle style of todays running socks.

i cant for the life of me remember the actual brand (fairly sure it wasnt explorer brand, but i could be wrong), and i cant for the life of me find any again.

i like the thick socks as they are comfortable, but i dont like long socks unless im wearing my boots, so these were an AWESOME compromise.

so, i guess what im asking is, 1) does anybody know what im talking about, and 2) does anybody know where i could find a pair or 10?

Cheers
Macca

Oops...

Actually, Allgoods locally have a really large range of socks, if I think of it I will call in and browse.

Many, many moons ago, there existed a range of Explorer socks that were almost knee-length. But I've never seen an anklet version.

I usually just roll down the tops of whatever I'm wearing, so they sit just above the boot. Great snakebite deterrent.

Yes I know what you mean. I have a pair of Columbia socks that would meet that description. I wear them with mid-height trail shoes sometimes. Can't remember where I got them though. In Hobart, as a starting point, I suggest trying Mountain Designs. I occasionally visit their Sydney store and found MD usually has a good range of socks, some of which should meet your description. They are likely to be described as trail running socks, or similar. A bit like the low anklet ones I use for running but these ones come above the ankle and are thicker, like bushwalking socks. I've seen plenty of these socks around but where/when? Despite the many criticisms (including my own) Kathmandu is also worth a try, but only if the sale is still on.
