TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Marmot Leadville Softshell

Tue 27 Apr, 2010 8:37 pm

Hi Everyone

I am looking to get myself a Marmot Leadville Softshell rather than a TNF Apex Bionic as the pricing is cheaper due to our dollar. It has received very good reviews but they are all americans. So I was wondering if anyone in australia has experience or second hand knowledge on this softshell. I do like the fit of the TNF though the arms are quite long for me. I have short arms and was told that the Marmot one has a shorter arm length.

I usually wear my IB Bodyfit 200 and a fleece jacket when doing daywalks which is fine, but it does get cold when it is windy and now thinking of using a windstopper softshell on those days. I do have a hardshell but dont think it is breathable and maybe windproof (and surprisingly the last time i had to take out was last year march when i was going up Mt Oberon at Wilsons Prom. I had my IB and that jacket, it was pouring and i was wet but dont know if cos the rain got in or sweat not getting out as it was hard going straight up without stopping. Anyways, back to the softshell, if someone has an opinion that another brand is better, please let me know. Thank you

Cheers
eric

I don't want to hijack but can I ask why you want a softshell?
It is my understanding that they are really only suitable for high, cold, snowy environments and do not all that well in the wet.
Cheers.

I was looking at a softshell to use not only for bushwalking but also as an everyday jacket. I do know its limitation when it comes to rain but as i have said in the first post, it hardly rains heavily when i am bushwalking but if it did, i have a waterproof hardshell to use. My hardshell is not practical enough to use everyday, plus I use an umbrella when it is raining tho not in the bush.

Btw, I have ordered my Marmot softshell, maybe if get a chance, may post a review here.

Cheers

Hope your new purchase works out. The best outer garment I have found is the Mammut top made out of Polartec Windpro I think. It is the fabric that relies on tight weave of Polarfleece to stop or slow the wind rather than the membrane used in Windstopper. This means it breaths extremely well and is light and packs up well. Not cheap but almost the ideal garment for cold windy days but of course zero rain resistance though remains warm when wet.

Softshell is nowadays the rage mainly because it does not get that tired pilled look that Polarfleece gets plus can block the wind. I have a few 300 Polarfleece tops and the wind far whistles through them. The Windpro manages to not pill and stop the wind as softshell but at a weight saving.
