TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Anyone every take a thermometer out bush?

I've often thought about taking one but would'nt mind if it could record the min and max temps for the day be very light and durable.

Any products?

Hi Enduro,

I take one out, but not this type. When I'm leading, I've got a lightweight thermometer in the medical kit - had a 15y.o. once look OK, but a bit pale. His fever was 41°C when we got him to the car.

Once bitten...

I take a Suunto watch that has the thermometer built in. Not so accurate if you are wearing it though. Generally at night I stick it in the pocket of the tent and check it every time I wake to see how low it gets. So far I have seen it as low as 1 to 2 degrees and it was snowing outside.

Ive got a casio protrek but like abowen, find that its not accurate if worn, due to the heat comming from your wrist.

I had been eyeing one of those kestrel 4000 weather stations, that are very light. they the good thing about them is that it can track temperature changes over the night as you sleep, so you can tell exactly how cold it got, and at what time, etc.
I think at the end of the day, it'll be another one of those gadgets that I want but dont need, and will just be dead weight to carry around.

We have a few cheap radioshack indoor/outdoor digital readout thermometers that we use at home and car/campertrailer camping, but I haven't taken it bushwalking yet. Considered taking it on some snow trips. It weighs about 80g. I've been surprised how often I refer to it at home to decide what to wear dog walking or cycling.

Thats what I concluded when I was going down the road of want.
Great want, but end of the day just stick your head outside of the tent....

Have often thought it would be good to have some light weight unbreakable temp guage though....

Re: Thermometer?

hi

that kestrel unit looks interesting - i have a protrek casio and it would be an understatement to say that it is not accurate - the best thing about the watch is the solar charging

Will Ritveld from BPL is a great reviewer and his review on this was excellent - thanks for posting the link

re the unit - like most of the things that i've ditched to reduce weight this is not a necessity (unless walking in alpine regions i suspect) but it would be fun to add the extra info to that which you get form a map - weather change, temp lows and highs during the day, humidity - GPS is sort of like this when walking - not usually necessary but nice to see the average speed, time stopped and moving and fun to mull over and chat about with your mates over dinner prep

if any one finds a good deal please post it here - i would consider buying it

great thread!

I have one of these ...

Weighs 52g with a single AAA battery. Has an interior/exterior sensor and records maximum and minimum tempertures and humidity. It's very simple to use. I bought it in Hong Kong a couple of years ago, so don't know if they are available in Australia. From memory, it wasn't expensive

in another case of buying overseas vs local,
the 4500 is $689 locally vs AU $330 delivered from ebay
i know where i'd rather buy from!

http://www.kestrelweather.com.au/kestre ... b9b180f10c

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWAX:IT

i think for an extra $30, over the 4000 model, the 4500 is much better value since it has a compass and alarm, so i can ditch the watch altogether
also i read that the 4500 can turn itself on every 30 mins to take measurements and turn itself off so batteries last over 10 days. the 4000 has to be on continuous so batteries barely last 3 days.

another one to consider is the brunton adc pro. much cheaper at $170 delivered, lighter, but less user friendly and doesnt use AAA batteries. i like to keep my electonics all using the same batteries.

If you carry a GPS then you will also have a thermometer. To get an accurate GPS position it's important to know the temperature. I know that the Garmin's have access to a system menu via holding down certain buttons when you turn the unit on.

I dont think my Garmin Oregon 400 has a thermometer. Although, it would have been a good idea to put a thermometer in.

Why would it be important to know the temperature to get an accurate GPS position?

I cannot see how it could, and am unaware of any temp sensor in my Garmin e-trex.

Hi

The only thing I can think of is GPS is not brilliant for altitude so a few use a barometer to get the altitude and maybe there is a relationship between temperature and altitude so the smarter units adjust using a built in thermometer. I have an Edge 305 that uses a barometer but have not spotted any temperture function though the newer model has a temperature sensor but I thought that was more just for a training reference. Just a thought.

Like other Garmin users I cannot find a thermometer on my etrex Venture HC .but then again as my younger more savvy mates would tell you "there is not much I can find on it"

There is no thermometer on that device or it's predecessor, the Vista Cx

Try the instructions on this page:

http://www.gpsinformation.org/dale/secret.htm

It worked for my Gecko 101, which is as old as the hills; a test page came up, with a thermometer.

Note warnings about losing data through factory resets.

Worked on my eTrex as well.

As I understand it, most GPS devices will contain a thermometer, at least any cheap ones (i.e. that we can afford). GPS works from very precise timing from the satellite and your GPS unit. While it's beyond me to explain in too much detail, factoring in the unit temperature helps to reduce the error in the GPS unit timing device.

Another link to garmin startup sequences to access the thermometer http://www.weethet.nl/english/gps_garmi ... ostics.php. Works on my Garmin Vista H.

Just found this -
http://www.mwave.com.au/productdetail.asp?sku=49080294

Good website to subscribe to if you like IT gadgets & stuff.
Doesn't say much in the specs, what the max & min temp's it will work in, how heavy, etc.

Try Coghlans "Time and Temp Digital Dangler". I just bought one from Rays camping for $35

Just went and picked one of these up, got it from Jaycar for $20- so saved the $10 freight the above is quoting.

Initial impressions are OK- it's bigger than i expected and though doesnt appear too robust. I like the addition of having moonphase, humidity as well as an alarm. The compass is a joke- its on the underside and 12mm in diameter and mine has air bubbles trapped under it rendering it inoperable- even after quite a few solid taps to displace the air. Has max/min recording as well which is nice.

Overall very likely a functional product but not one for leaving dangling on the outside of your pack.
