TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Seam sealing nylon

Postby Lizzy » Tue 15 Aug, 2023 7:46 am

Hi- I have an old Sierra designs lightning ht tent which I need to re-seal. It says it’s nylon
Is my only option seam grip wp or will the silicon/turps method work or something else that is a bit more economical?
Thanks

You mean the entire fly? There are spray-on silicon waterproofing preparations but not sure of the cost. One of those (Grangers is usually considered to be one of the best) or the silicon/turps thing.

I have sprayed the outside of the fly with a DWR spray but the underside seams are all flaky. We are scrapping them off and not sure if this material is suitable for a silicone seam seal or if I have to use a nylon specific one???
Thanks for your advice

If it's just the seams, Seam Grip (the SilNy type) will work or the silicone/turps thing.

The flaking bits is a good indication that it was taped over a PU coated fabric.
In this case do keep scraping off what you can and the apply Seam Grip but not the sil type.
The sil type could work but the PU version (standard Seam Grip) works better.
