TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

A 15cm minimum hole, and quite often I will go deeper, sometimed through necessity
All depends how easy the digging is / how long I can clinch for / stand the comfort factor / ward off the incoming leeches / etc...
I still think the edge of the butt of the handle could be rounded off a bit better. But I know you will not hear a bad word said about the iPood so don't read this ok?

I know what you mean! But you could always go wider, instead. :-)

I'd rather not go at all, but I'm sure that's not good for you . I opt for a deeper hole than wider if possible, lest animals dig it up.

Less environmental footprint to go deeper rather than wider.
My aim's pretty good - haven't missed yet.

Normally a hole no wider than about 1 and a half i-Pood blade widths maximum, probably smaller.
I have often thought of a pictorial for this topic. Maybe one day I will. I think I might sketch a cartoon for the "do the deed" pic, ya don't wanna see this blinding white butt.

On that thought, how many of you squat? Does anyone else support themselves by placing a hand or two behind them? Do you look for a site near a log or branch to hang on to?
Typical "deed" time = < 40 seconds with enough scroggin in the diet, 100 to 120 grams a day, and fibre plus for brekky.
That gives you enough time to look out for leeches on your arms or legs, and know they won't get too far unless you squat too low.

I am a branch person - or drag a log over. If the area looks particularly leechy, I'll dig the hole and then spray the seat with DEET before exposing.

I don't do hands on the ground, but just squat. If there happens to be a nice round smooth low branch, or fallen log, then that's great to sit on (and if there's a nice stick poking out of it to use for a toilet roll holder, that's another bonus).

I'll look forward to the pictorial edition. :-)

a fellow scout was telling me a story on our last hike, of a scout leader he had when he was in venturers, who found a leech in his... err... crack... how he came to find it was there we are not sure. while he was telling me the story he was giving all the actions of a fully grown man bending over holding his cheeks apart, getting a venturer to burn the leech off with a lighter...

one would have to assume he wasnt a hairy man....

Deet is so much quicker and can be applied without assistance it may nip however burning in that area would be fraught with danger in fact I think I would be more inclined to let the leech have its feed then depart of its own accord

"Poop-a-Scoopers" - Isn't that an ABBA song??

Just a thought Adam, but you could put theme music to your "pictorial" - a nice little animation perhaps??

On a more serious note - do you guys ever use "poo tubes"? I was just reading about them...

Brett wrote: I can not get out of my mind the wording over the entrance to the dwarf kingdom in "Lord of the Rings" or was they over the entrance to Hades "All leeches that enter give up all hope".

It's supposedly over the entrance to Hell, as imagined in Dante's Divine Comedy, and the line is generally translated as 'Abandon hope, all ye who enter here', which can apply to leeches and bodily orifices as well as anything or anyone else, I suppose.

Hmmmm, actually, that would make an interesting tattoo . . .

No however I have used cling film and transferred the result to a wide mouth bottle, fortunately it was winter in the snow and the poo froze .
This and poo tubes may be the way of the future in our more remote areas if we want to preserve the pristine nature of them.
