I just got the Macpac Latitude 700 http://www.macpac.co.nz/shop/en_nz/gear-and-clothing/sleeping-bags/latitude-700-standard-size.html for a bargain price of $374 (they have a great sale on at the moment if you’re looking for winter gear). Now I have never owned a down sleeping bag but know they need to be treated with a bit more care than synthetic ones and never get them wet or you will freeze.

The question is should I stuff the sleeping bag into the bag to compress it or should you roll it up, I only ask because I have been told to stuff it not roll it. Is this true and if so why?

If you try to roll it in you'll spend the duration of the trip fighting to make it fit in.

The ACTUAL reason you want to stuff instead of roll... well I dont know. But im a stuffer.

I do have a room in my house just for my toys, so I could probably fit a wheelie bin in there.... but I just keep mine in the sacs provided when a top range sac is purchased.

I know of a walker who hangs his, but he rotates them and turns them upside down weekly so the stuffing doesnt all flop to one end.

mine live in my shed, wheelie bin keeps them dry and pest free.

The reason I've been told is that they have to be stuffed (and stuffed differently each time ie don't start from the same spot on the bag each time) so to prevent them forming "memory spots" (sorry stupid way of putting it but best I could think of). A bit like a mattress has to be rotated otherwise you wind up with a divot where you lie. Same same with the bag if it is rolled the same manor each time it will loft with the down in the same spot each time.

Well it sounds like i'll stuff it, mind you it'll have to live with the larger storage bag it came with as it's sure not getting a wheelie bin to live in

stuff and fluff but that is what I do. I have the same bag and LOVE it.

I keep mine in the mesh bag and then put it into my back pack.

My dad always told me that rolling sleeping bags caused the seams on the outside of the 'roll' to stretch and hence wear more quickly. Sounds fair to me.
