TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

NeoAir or Montbell UL Comfort?

Wed 14 Sep, 2011 7:50 pm

Hi guys,

I'm looking for feedback and experiences people have had with the ThermaRest Neoair and/or the Montbell UL Comfort System.

I've just bought a Large NeoAir and tried it out at home. I've got a Montbell UL Comfort system setup arriving in the mail this week and I will need to choose which mat to keep, and which to offload.

I understand the NeoAir is considerably more comfortable (a quick test impresses me with its comfort) but I do admit the durability does concern me a little. I've also heard mixed reports about mats deflating overnight etc. The Montbell appealed to me as it looks to be more durable and doesn't soley rely on inflation. The Montbell pillow system and extension pad also seem like good ideas.

Any pros / cons either way would be appreciated.

Cheers

I was a little worried about my Neo air's durability when I first got it too. So I babied it. These days not so much. Have had it just over a year now and I'm very happy with it. My GF has had hers a bit longer and is also happy. I've read about the delamination problems but haven't seen this in either of ours.

Hi Nathan,

I have had my NeoAir regular for just over a year now, I have use mine on the snow with an extra CF mat and in sub zero temps on its own.

I have not had any problems with it deflating, but I am carefull where I place it and I am careful not to over inflate it and I adjust the pressure during the night as temperatures change.

Over all I like my NeoAir and at the moment it is my goto mat.

Tony

Thanks for the feedback.

The Montbell UL Comfort Pad and Pillow arrived in the mail today. Very impressed with the quality, weight and packed size. Obviously not as comfy as the NeoAir but not too bad.

Will take them both out this weekend and give them a night each. Leaning towards the Montbell at the moment, but I have an open mind :)

Of course if you like neoair comfort but are a bit concerned about toughness you could have grabbed the trekker model. Tad heavier, smidge bigger packed. Above all they are a nice blue colour.
