Nemo obi 1P and other lightweight tent options (pics added!)

does anyone have experience with the Nemo Obi 1P?

I basically want a very lightweight tent to take with me backpacking.
This will be more for "just incase" situations, or where I want to stay overnight somewhere so i can photograph sunrise/sunset etc.

1kg is the weight I'm aiming for. 1.5kg is def pushing it.

Hilleberg akto and tarptent scarp/moment are the coolest 1 man lw tents going around at the moment. (also terra nova tents? ). The only thing in budget there is tarptent?

The Hilleberg akto is getting a little heavy at 1.5kg or so.

The tarptent moment is interesting though. easy set up, once peice etc.
though i don't like the idea of having to seal it yourself, that's a bit odd.
and the thing i prefer about the obi is that you can use it sans fly for some night watching.
hmmm. and the obi would be better in rain.

any other options?

edit: sorry just noticed you mentioned the terra nova tents.
quite simillar to the nemo obi, but for some reason the nemo appeals to me more.

I cannot vouch for the Obi, but I can for Nemo. I have the Meta 2p and the Losi Storm 3p and can say that Nemo make a lot of tent out of little weight and the quality and thought is superb. If you use a trekking pole (you only need one) have a good look at the Nemo Meta 1p. It's 1kg and the vestibule is huge. lol, thanks for the suggestion, but 399 pounds delievered is AU$630.
The other place had it for US$350 with 40% off (including the code for 15% off)= US$210 + 50 postage = ~AU$270, so less than half the cost!
Hence why I'm unhappy with them taking nemo tents off their website!
I'll see if i can email them back.

ok tent arrived on friday!

there's one thing that came with it that I don't understand is for.
it's a hollow metal tube about 6" long. same material as the poles, but the diameter is slightly larger in that it can slide over the poles.
what on earth would that be for?

pole repair 'kit' i'd guess. slide it over, tape it on. Hillebergs come with them.
Sounds like a bargain btw. I had the meta1, too small but very well made and designed.

yeah you're right, my old man presumed that when i asked.
And yeah very good deal, inlcuding $11 for 50ft of kelty triptease rope. i got this tent, and the free footprint delivered for under AU$300 with the aussie dollar just below parity.
Though i think the extra 15% discount has ended.

I just set it up, apart from when i tried to put the fly on backwards (due to the logo being on the inside of the tent, not outside, causing me to change all the clips as i thought they were put on wrong, and then resulting in great confusion wondering why the vestibule was not on the same side as the entrance to the tent inner), it was amazingly simple to put up.
Outside of the bedroom i've probably pitched a tent maybe 5 times in my life, so considering how easy it was goes to show how simple the design is.
The Jakes feet are pretty clever. Not sure how other free standing tents do this, but I imagine it'd be pretty easy to rotate your tent on the ground.

This is probaly misleading, it's not as room as this pic suggests, but ample room for one person:


I'm 6'2, and just have enough room to sit up. head might scrape the mesh roof slightly.
If i was any taller than 6'2, length of the tent would def start to become an issue.
I would prefer it a little longer so that my head didn't feel so cramped in the head end of the tent, but it's ok.
I want to be able to put my camera bag inside the tent for security reasons (theft and rain). There's a bit of room at my feet, a little cramped though.
Maybe more room next to my head though that would add to the cramped issue




Overall, very satisfied. Thinking about camping in the front yard tonight like a school kid

Oh btw, the single unit pole setup is brilliant. Takes like 10 seconds to put together, and there's no guesswork. so simple.

so funny! yes it does match! but a coincidence.
I think i've decided i'll take the footprint with me, which is an extra 220grams, so pretty heavy (70D material) to take with me backpacking for a year, but a hole in my floor is the last thing i'll want.
I was also going to get a lighter sleeping bag, the WM summerlite, but i tried to get into it the other day and it was just too damn small.
so with the extra weight of using my existing sleeping bag and footprint, i've decided i can't afford the weight of a sleeping pad but thanks for the link

Seriously, no sleeping pad? If weight and $ is something you're minimising, I would never go without a mat. A sleeping bag won't keep you warm on cold ground. Why not get a $5 cheapy open cell mat and cut it to head-knee length? It will double as a great sit mat during the day, a clean spot to fiddle with the camera gear, attatched to the outside of your bag.

yeah well i was considering a small prolite thermarest, but i'm not gonna be in cold areas for a while, doing S.E asia from november-March (so fricken hot), then up through china and and the 'stans, then onto europe. so maybe i'll get a mat at some stage through my trip. it's a year long trip so plenty of time to make mistakes and learn!
i'm sure i could always throw a few clothes on the ground though if gets cold and i haven't got a mat yet
money is not the issue, it's size and weight
btw. I will not be camping or trekking a whole lot, another reason why i can't justify the weight of a full setup

neo air is too tall and will take away effective length from my tent (i.e feet will then hit the roof of the tent)
that intertia x frame looks good, i was about to buy one, but as i don't need one for the first few months of my trip, i'll get something later on, hopefully i can find one of those!

haha, no didn't notice, i read it as lineman, though good pickup.
there was another simillarly spec'd tent that i was considering, but it was an ugly maroon colour that didn't appeal to me.
So yep the colour of this tent did help my decision, but was only a part of my reasonings.
Though I do like your theory that people choose things based on emotion, and then construct an arguement for that thing to justify their choice.

That is funny because I have read his comments before (so, yes I was aware of his review when you asked here...) and always also read his name as lineman .

I sold cameras for 30 years so in spite of the fact that I often get rubbished when I point things like that out, my comments are based on experience and as I stated I am not immune from it.
Anyway , get that funny mat, you will thank me after a few nights on the ground without one...

guys I've decided I want a 2P tent, so i can put my pack inside or to be able to fit another person just in case.
I'd have gone the obi 2P, but it loses 3" in length which is a bit silly.
anyone want to buy it let me know, selling it for $300 delivered. Other than setting it up above, I've not used it.
Just taken tags off and cut off instructions/warning inside tent.
