I'm after a lightweight (~1.5kg) 2P tent to take backpacking for a year.
Will only be used occassionally as I'll mostly be staying in hostels and the like.

I actually just purchased a Nemo Obi 1P, which is almost perfect, but i've decided i want to be able to fit my pack inside the tent (even though the Obi has a big vestibule) or fit another person just in case.

Requirements (or wants) are pretty much exactly the Obi 1P:
Inner fly so that I can take the outer fly off on hot nights and watch the sky etc.
Min. length ~2200mm. (I'm 6'2 and find this a comfortable length.)
Preferably a vestibule.
Lightweight, so around 1.5kg.
Prefer easy set-up. Loved how easy it is to pitch the free standing obi 1P.
Price is flexible, preferably $400 or less, but can be swayed.
(will likely buy from states or use priceusa etc if required, but am running out of time as am leaving in around 3 weeks)



The Obi 2P would be a perfect candiate, if it weren't for the decrease in length from 2210mm to 2130mm.

Oh and I'll be selling my Obi 1P in as new condition (only tested it out on the front lawn once, and cut the tags etc) for about $300 with a footprint if anyone is interested.

not quite the length i needed, but now that i think about it, being wider you can lie at an angle...

Perhaps have a look at the Nemo Espri 2P and the Wilderness Equipment Dart UL

Lieing at an angle is never a great comprimise. Especially when you may have an extra companion for a night or two. I think you're really going to want to order soon if you've only got three weeks. My last package (sent at the start of this month) took about 3 weeks via usps express to get here.

Maybe an MSR? Hubba hubba hp? Not sure what the length is. I'm about the same height and have slept in a hubba ok. You'll find too that if the tent has steeper walls at the ends you don't necessarily need the excess length.

Length is 2286 mm. It has two side entry vestibules - I like that design, you can have pack(s) on one side and potentially cook on the other. When there are two people you don't have to disturb the other person when you contort out of a tunnel tent entrance in the middle of the night. Mimumum weight is 1.5kg and is $399 with 65 Moontrail points which are always great for a cash discount or for ordering even more gear

hmmm that's a touch heavy at 1.7kg, good size though.
The Big agnes Fly creek ul2 is only 1inch shorter than the Nemo obi 1P, though the foot end is supported by only a single pole end in the middle with two pegs to take out the corners, so not fully freestanding. This creates quite a bit of slope so i think that might hit my feet. Though the head end of the tent does appear to be quite vertical (and low cut mesh so won't be claustaphobic to get in tight) so maybe it would work. So hard to judge from internet!
Really need to decide in the next few days, and i think i'm more confused than when i started.
I'm trying to read reviews on REI for the flycreek, and some people say it is ok for ~6'2, some say your feet and head hit and it's onyl good for under 6ft... I think the weight saving might justify all these, seeing as i'll only be using it occasionally. it is exceptionally light...

The Fly Creek is very good except for two things.
The vestibule is small.
The side clips which are used to pull the tent out wider are small and a fiddle to use.

I have stacks of room but am only 5' 9''.

thanks, nice and roomy! Though you need two hiking poles for that tent don't you? I didn't plan on taking hiking poles with me...

Just shoot an email to SMD and see if they offer optional poles. I just took a quick look at the site and couldn't tell.

6'2", 1.5kg and two persons with space is not easy.
Perhaps the Lightwave from LuxeOutdoors, inexpensive and innovative,
Perhaps something from Tarptent like a Scarp 2 but the aesthetics are not so great.
At the top end you could look at a Helsport Ringstind 2, see the the thread here "Like an Atko for Tall Types"

What poles did you use? I just don't intend to do a whole lot of walking/hiking, though my right knee has been playing up lately so who knows maybe a hiking pole would be usefull? My trip is an overland trip all through asia and europe, so they'd probably be more annoying than anything else.

I can't recall what has turned me off the Tarptents before (this is soo confusing!)

Helsport Ringstind 2 seems a little too intense and expensive, but very interesting.

Perhaps what turned you off Tarptents was comments from non users/owners my current shelters are Scarp 1 and Scarp 2 ,very happy with both for the price and as good as many Tents I have used /owned over the last 50+ years

I'm thinking it was because i thought they weren't factory sealed? though i can't recall now. They don't seem to mention that they're not sealed on the website :/

You can have them seam sealed in Australia by Franco for around $20.00 before you take delivery or do it yourself as I did with both mine which I also did with my Macpac Stellar and Microlite ,easy as

As an example here is a picture of the sub lite (doesn't fit your specs) with Helinox Trekking Poles:

I started using poles in the last year - they are my knee's best friends going down steep hills. Doubling as my tent poles is a bonus.

The Scarp's are great tents however the Scarp 2 weighs 1.7kg so over your stated weight, however you do get a 4 season tent for this you'd need however to check with Tarptent as to whether they could supply within the 3 weeks you mentioned. No trekking poles needed with the Scarp and as Corvus said Franco can seal the tent for you and does a great job.

yeah i just realised that it was over my weight requirement. 1.7kg is too much.
I would go the Lunar Duo but it's 1.1kg does not include poles. It also doesn't give you sky viewing, but being able to open up the ends so much would make up for that.

I think i'm just gonna go the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 2.
It's only 1" shorter than the nemo obi 1P, and where your head goes, its right next to mesh, rather than solid wall, will hopefully make it more comfortable getting your head very close (or touching) the wall without feeling too claustraphobic (I hope!)
It's packed weight, including weight of footprint, is 1.33kg, which is pretty damn good.

As it's only $300 plus ~$58 postage including "free" footprint. not too bad!
Main problem is that they don't have any in stock! few days they tell me...

edit: purchased! I'll just cancel it if they take too long to get it in stock. Will post back here with some photos when i get it.

For the record Luxeoutdoor tents are best bought on the net,
They are well made but not in the Hilleberg or old Macpac league.
They mostly have mesh inners.
The Habitat is very similar to the Hubba
and the Lightwave resembles a Terra Nova Laser
The Lightwave can be found on ebay between $180-$240 and is Luxe's current top of line product.

really? i can only see one lightwave luxe on ebay for $395
It's got a lot of length, about 2.4 meters. though you'd probaby want to use a fair bit of that length to put behind your head so that the roof is not so low directly above your eyes.

BTW, six moon design emailed me, i didn't notice but they've got carbon fiber poles and aluminium poles that they sell. about 50grams for a carbon fiber pole at $30 each. pretty good!
