I have been looking into buying a roomy 1 person or small 2 person lightweight backpacking tent and I didnt realise the huge variety of options available from quality tent makers. Which is the best; Vaude Power Lizard, Big Agnes Fly Creek, MSR CArbon Reflex, Terra Nova Laser comp., Widerness Equipment tectite etc. etc.

1kg tent??? I dont think any of those hit the 1 kg mark

2 are quoted bang on 1kg, 1 is quoted 1.02kg another 0.95kg and the last 1.23kg. I would suggest that 1kg is a close enough generalisation for these tents

Hahaha nice, I had the same thought....

As a Terra Nova (the lighter Photon not the heavy Laser comp) owner I may be biased. It is a good tent, but strictly 3 seasons. Smaller tents more prone to condensation. I like the Big Agnes tents, but I REALLY dont trust the cross screw in poles. Probably the only thing stopping me from trading in my Akto for one.
After the Eldons where we all struggled to keep anything dry, I just love the way the Akto performed. Seemed to get less condensation and keep a drier floor than the heavier, more solid Soulo's that were on the trip!!

The new Tarptent Stratospire is a two person double wall tent weighing in at 1.1kg so slightly above your specs and uses trekking poles (so extra weight if you don't normally carry them). Very roomy, lots of set up options and the trekking poles aren't in the living space. It is a mesh inner so need to consider the warmth factor for winter. It's an intriguing innovative design.

oh ok was just a bit suprised, I only checked the WE tectile weights on their site it quoted

Min Pitch Wt: 1.23kg
Package Wt: 1.62kg

I'm not 100% sure but i think min pitch weight only includes bare minimum number of pegs needed to set up tent ie no pegs for guy lines, no stuff sack, no pole repair sleeve etc etc. Hence I never look at min pitch weight when looking a tent specs, usually I go by the package weight as that is closer to what I end up carrying. Were you quoting min pitch weight for all the others as well??

Thanks Dale the tarptent does look intriguing, the trekking pole thing doesnt do it for me as I dont use them, do they supply poles if needed?
I am not really desperate to find a tent under 1kg I was just very surprised how many there are when you have a look. I would be happy with a decent tent 1.5kg or less.

The MSR Carbon reflex reminds me alot of the Double rainbow by Tarptent. I think the design is clever.

Measuring gear by weight only could be misleading. The W.E. Tectite is the heaviest of them, but it also has the thickest fabrics of all the tents mentioned. Presumably it's more durable than most or all of the other tents listed in this thread.

No need to apologize...

One of the "experts" at BPL called the StratoSpire a "puppy tent" so Japanese kite is somewhat of an improvement.
(mind you he confused the mesh inner with the fly but I suppose even experts sometimes do that...)
I should be taking it up to the Vic alps this week so I will see how it performs.
Not what I would suggest to the OP because it is large enough for 3 so really too large for solo use.

The StratoSpire 1 will be more like it (that is a large solo shelter) but again it works better with trekking poles than the 150g Easton poles (for the pair) that will be available for it .

If doogs is around 180cm or under I would suggest the Tarptent Moment with the liner.
That gives you a dry and fast set up at just over 1 KG. Add the extra pole and it will hold a foot or so of wet snow and turn it into a freestanding shelter.
