Paddys have a couple of pair left in the Extra large size I need to fit my size 46 boots, as i am headed to the USA for December and January I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with them and whether I really need them or rather they are just a little extra insurance.
New York state and minimum temperatures are usually around minus 15 to minus 24, I have a choice of boots too and I'm asking advice on the best pairs to take with me, my usual boots are still in good condition but not very stiff, i can take a leather mountain boot i would normally wear for winter when there was the possibility of needing a pair of crampons and i hadn't actually considered the plastic double boots as I won't be doing any glacier walking or climbing.
not really convinced about XCR goretex but that is all they have left

I use a pair of berghaus (not sure what model) as they are the only ones i can find that fit my tree truck calves without coming up to my groin... I have had them for a couple of years now and they are holding up fairly well. I think they had some sort of breathable panel on the back, as there is a layer of something peeling off now, but other than that they are still going strong. Far better than the S2S ones that i had some years ago as a teenager...

Well I am surprised that so few members seem to have used Supergaiters, I guess I'll just buy them and see how they work at those temperatures

Yetis - a blast from the past. I used to buy the rands and make my own goretex tops. They were fantastic gaiters when I had leather tele boots, but having moved to plastic boots they gave become more obsolete. I suppose I'd still use them for any alpine walking in winter, if I was doing it.

The rands used to pop off the front of the boots a bit, which was irritating . I used to put a few staples in with a staple gun to stop this happening, or semipermanently fix them with a line of aquaseal.

They are great gaiters. Didn't realize they were still around . They were prob put of most walkers price range back then, which is why I made mine.

Paddys have them cheap on evilbate at the moment but only XLs i think.
I used my old Chouinard supergaiters to keep the UV off my old Scarpa T-2s and they lasted almost 12 years, just got my new big Tele boots and wanted to do the same thing. I still have my Scarpa leather tele boots, great for tripping around the village on the old skinnies.
Also when i used them I found my plastic boots a lot warmer as the original T-2 seemed to leak badly at the toe.
A hundred pounds each pair in the UK nowadays Paddys sale is $70- a pair if you take that size

Well my boots just arrived in the afternoon mail, the new T1s are so much bigger than the original, I guess I'll be using the new gaiters on my walking and mountain boots.

Are they now designing tele boots that lock your knees straight??!

Interesting about your T2s leaking. I've had Garmont excursions for ~8yrs, and bought second hand T1's 2yrs ago, and not had any issues.

Maybe DON'T staple the rands on! Ok in leather, but sounds a great way to make your T1s leak!!

Mine were the original T-2 with the stitched, lace up inner, stolen a few years back and I do miss'em.
I had some downhill boots that leaked in the same place so it seems to be a common occurrence.
No locking knees LOL
Garmont excursion? are they not very similar to the original T2?

I'll use silicon if anything.
Question how difficult is stitching the rubber rand when you made you own gaiters? the rubber looks pretty thick

You had to stitch it by hand. I'm sure there's someway to get rubber to slide under a seeing machine foot but I haven't yet worked it out!

Yep . My Garmonts are very similar to my Scarpas. Maybe I have T2's. The main difference is that the inners of the Scarpas lace up. The Garmonts don't. I bought the Scarpas off flea-bay for about $100. They've been great.

Hope your knees are up to a month of telemarking! My brother in law teles in Utah each year. He gets all his gear over the, so perhaps you'll end up with some exciting goodies as well!!

I will probably take the old set and my boots and if I get a good buy on bindings I'll bring me bindings back with me. $550- here $200 over there for the Targa G3

Anybody got any tips for fitting these things, the new rand is about three times the thickness and stiffness of the original and I can't get it to stretch over the sole of my boots ( and I do have the correct Skywalk sole for these particular gaiters )

But 20 minutes in boiling water to soften the rubber rand WOW??
