I recently purchased a Nikon AW100 and took it kayaking with me over the weekend (Glenelg River Victoria). Upon my return, I realised that only the pictures taken on day one were viewable. I know I checked the image after each shot was taken and it was definitely there. A 32GB memory card was in the camera at the time. Has anyone had a similar experience or knows what my problem may be please? Thanks.

Actually, a more constructive thought - the camera seems to have "Internal memory (approx. 83 MB)". Maybe the SD card moved in it's slot and lost contact, and the camera reverted to internal memory?

Thanks Ollster, I don't have the camera here with me at work, so do you think I will still be able to retrieve the images if they're in the internal memory?

I think he's saying the ones from the first day may have filled the internal memory, leaving the card unfortunately empty for the entire trip.

Yup, you may need to repeat that trip... I had an old Olympus that had a similar thing, there was a menu setting to switch from internal to SD card.

Nah, I actually thought the following may have occurred:
-First day worked ok, all files went to SD as the camera makes some assumption to use the SD slot.
-Second day - maybe the SD card was bumped and therefore did not get sensed by the camera as being inserted. Therefore subsequent photos were stored on internal memory. (my old Olympus used to do this occasionally, but that was with older xD cards, it however didn't have internal memory, it just stopped sensing the card until it was reinserted).
-When Danuszia goes to extract SD card and view photos - she only sees the first day's photos as the others are still on the camera.

*IF* the other photos went to internal memory, you should be able to plug the camera into a computer via a supplied cable (assumption - there is one) without the SD card in.

This is all just a wild guess...

EDIT: sounds like the guys above may be onto the answer though... I was being optimistic.

I will have it sorted by Wednesday when I'm over in Tassie - thanks guys - hopefully the images are still there... I'll check tonight

Is it possible they were deleted?

There is software to (hopefully) undelete files as long as they have not been overwritten...

If you put the SD in the camera, can you see the missing images on the screen?

Thanks for responding Michael, it's not possible they were deleted and you can't see the missing images on the screen anymore I think I've learnt a valuable lesson though!

I would take the card in to a specialist camera shop (IE not JB Hi FI and co...) and get them to try a photo recovery programme on it.
(BTW most cameras will give you a warning when the internal memory is full)

Actually i was a devoted Canon consumer - my first IXUS was purchased in 2000 and was a real talking point throughout my holiday in Bali... during my Australian Alps Trek last year, my second IXUS lens kept catching on my backpack and led to a dislodgement during my research for a replacement the Nikon was the toughest/lightest camera on the market in my price range so I went for it. My first use of the camera was on the river just last weekend and I'm not happy Jan!

You may find the SD card needs to formatted in the camera. You will usually find the option in the setup menu.

Great News everyone... My daughter downloaded about 300 images last night so it looks like the problem just went away???? Or perhaps the camera was only showing me the views from it's hard drive and not from the card - who cares - I've got photos and my tween is awesome

I want a waterproof, shock proof, dustproof, electrocution proof camera that takes AA batteries.

OH must do at least 720p video at 30 fps.

I don't ask much, OHH must be light too.

The Panasonic Lumix FT3 meets all those requirements other than AA batteries.
AA batteries, while convenient and easy to find, don't pack the energy density of Lithium Ion rechargeables. Lithium Ion rechargeables are also better for the environment.
I too used to hike with a digitial camera with multiple sets of AA batteries, but just wouldn't go the distance. The Lumix will easily do 300 photos per battery (flash dependent), is shock - dust - water proof, takes 1080 full HD, and is very light. I got a spare genuine Panasonic battery from ebay for around 30 bananas.

Our FT2 (the older model) has been superb.

Yeah more than a few company's make TOUGH cameras, but don't have AA battery versions, they are the perfect camera to take camping or travel where AA batteries would be perfect, but SCREW U *&^%$#@!, buy our batteries instead

I consider light to be under 200 grams.

My Pentax WG-1 is 162g, including battery and SD card.

Does not count No AA batteries.

I had another look.
I can only find a couple of cheap Kodak cameras that are weathersealed and take AA batt.
(the feature search at DPReview lists a few more but they actually take Li batt..)

John I think you will have to make one.
The alternative is to use knock off batteries at twelve to fifteen dollars a pop delivered and use the minichargers that come with the camera.
Fifty bucks worth of camera batteries takes up a lot less space than AA and gets you a lot further.
