Looks like eVent tents are making a comeback. Rab has just released their new Latok Base tent made of eVent

Theres some serious specs on this tent, with a $845 price to match the specs
- a 3.4kg weight for a 3-4 man geodesic
- 175cm x 2.4cm long so suitable for a larger person. 110cm height.
- combo of 9.9mm and 8.8mm poles
- 3 donut holes to tie in

not sure what happened regarding the ban on the use of eVEnt tents over a certain height.
Base on its price alone, I think it pretty much puts it out of reach for all but a very small handful of mountaineers with specific requirements.

What tent ?
it is a 3-4 person bivi , not a tent.

I think this is the new Guinness record holder for largest bivi on sale.

ah hah! okayyy... i see they put it under the bivi category, with no mention of the word "tent" on their website.

in that case, its also probably the Guiness record holder of the most expensive bivi in the world too.

I have not seen a picture of this one with the door open but I imagine that there is a mesh door just behind the eVent one and nothing else inside , having the poles attached to the fabric Integral Design style.
looks really nice for the intended purpose.
Nothing for the wind to catch and a good snow shedding top.
I remember some BPL tests with someone cooking inside a previous all eVent shelter, the steam did not turn into condensation nor ice...

When GE bought BHA the inventors of eVent it put a max height for shelters made with eVent at 70cm.
That was probably to minimise the risk of someone cooking inside the shelter , eVent is not fire proof and GE is a very large company..
(easy target for lawsuits...)
That is why several RAB shelters in theory are 70cm high, in practice a bit more than that...

Obviously need to work out the moves to get changed in some weather but I do like the idea of a 'tent' that is still effectively waterproof (or moreso?) collapsed.
I wonder what that is they use for the windows on the bigger model..

I heard they stopped making them because of problems with ice damaging the gore tex somehow...

Really? That's slightly alarming. Is my goretex bivy ruined, I wonder?

A little goggling reveals that they do a 2 person version, the Latok Ultra, at 800mm high and weighing a mere 1.6kg AND I seem to be able to find for $A450 plus postage. This thing actually sounds tempting.

I had the previous one, (the Rab summit superlite bivi) and can honestly say the specs on the floor length is deceptive



i'm only a short guy at about 1.7m but i think any taller and you'll be touching the ends. the shape just slants way too much and unless you use this as an additional tent to compliment your other tents up in the mountains, its just not a very comfortable tent to live in. I could only just manage to sit up if i'm perfectly in the centre.

I had the impression it was to do with very extreme environments like high altitude, that and the price of them stopped production. but was decades ago and the gore tex was different back then, possibly inferior.

There are several types of PTFE based fabrics mostly marketed under the Gore Tex and eVent brands.
Note that they have in common the PTFE (expanded Teflon...) base but the fabric layer and the baking layer (if there at all) are different as is the "Teflon" base.
Bibler have used (and still do) what they call Todd Tex, Integral Design used Tegraltex (very similar if not identical to the Todd Tex) now have switched to the eVent camp .
(Rab and Integral Design are owned by the same company)
Exped also use a type of eVent called by them Vent Air.
So in one form or another PTFE has been around for a long time and it is still here.

How do you get from 220cm of floor length to less than 180cm usable space ?
Well, very easily ... at least in my mind (that is by looking at the pole angle) , and that is why I often suggest to make a mock up of the tent to get a better idea of "usable space"
Again usable space is not you laying on the floor but you inside your sleeping bag on top of your mat, just like it happens in the bush...
