Vegetarian / Vegan Bushwalking - What do you like to eat?

Postby taonveg » Sun 22 Aug, 2010 6:47 pm

Hi All -

I'm a keen tramper and a vegan. Wondering if there are any fellow vegetarians or vegans here. And if so, what do you like to eat when on the track?

Cheers,

Paul

I am not a vegetarian but I very rarely eat meat. My diet living out in the bush consists of native plant foods, pasta (mixed with native foods, tomato sauce and dried peas, or honey), wheat bix type cereal with powdered milk and sugar, muesli bars, dried fruit and nuts. This diet would be plain for many people but I like it.

Cheers,

I tend not to eat meat walking and get a bit of a craving for protein so usually have some lentils or chick peas with my pasta or rice. If I'm organised I start them soaking in the morning and carry them in a container to save cooking time in the evening. I usually make a sauce and add the soaked lentils in. Another nice trick I learnt from a vegan walker in Tasmania is to carry some beans in an old stocking tied to the outside of the pack and soak it regularly at rest stops (If its not already wet from the rain....). This way you get a supply of fresh green sprouts as you get several days into a long walk, when you start to crave fresh foods.

I try to cook vego, and on the trail I've come to love my lentils (cliche'd hippy food I know, but once you know what to do with them they're great!)

I fry up half an onion, put some water in, a cup and a half of lentils, some spices, put in some zucchini or capscisums, and simmer till done.

Spices? Curry powder, mixed dry herbs, a bit of salt and some chilli flakes if you want. I keep the curry powder separate, so the other stuff can go into my scrambled eggs in the morning.

If you feel like you need more carbs, some noodles wouldn't go astray. For different flavours try vegie stock powder, or tomato cup-a-soup.
