I usually drink black tea as that seems to be the easiest when on the track. I would love to have a coffee ( instant is OK) and especially a hot chocolate, but what about the milk. I recently tried full cream milk powder and I thought it was terrible. Is there and answer or do I just stick to black tea.
Cheers, Wolfy

have you tried the Jarrah powdered drinks- like their Vienna Cafe?
Mon 04 Jun, 2012 11:47 am
I use those sashet ones, my mind is blank but they are vanilla latte, mocha that kind of thing.
Jarrah is one brand but there are a few others in the shops.
They are nice with just water, not sure but they might contain powdered milk.
I take a mini whisk from the elcheapo shop so I don't get lumps.

I like the sachets of chai latte. You could also try powdered coffee whitener in instant coffee.
Mon 04 Jun, 2012 7:03 pm
I used to use the sweetened condensed milk coffee tubes until switching to herbals
I have stopped drinking caffinated drinks if I'm walking or training. The diuretic effect gets really annoying.

I keep a look out for Jarrah when it is on special, $4.50 for 10 sachets, I like the white chocolate variety, & have one each night when out on a walk, just put the powder in first, then hot water, then stir, no lumps.

Fudge or Extreme Choc for me
Re the original question - i wonder if it was fresh or older full cream milk powder you tried. It is certainly different from fresh milk, but i've come to enjoy my morning 'real' coffee with milk powder on walks. I usually mix up enough milk for porridge as well as coffee - make sure the milk powder is not old, or it goes into a yukky suspension instead of dissolving. (there's another thread on this somewhere) Add powder to water as directed to avoid lumps. I usually use a bit less than i would with fresh milk - maybe try different amounts, weaker or stronger - if you dare!

A friend of mine ran out of milk a couple of months ago, He found some powdered milk in the pantry, added it to his coffee, thought it was terrible & suffered the runs as an after effect, Turns out it was his grandaughters baby milk formula!

Yes, that's the one I purchase, that's if they don't have the Extreme Choc. I've only ever seen it on the shelves once. It's the best.

Gday Strider.
Tea bags you can usually get at coles/woolies. Look for the roobois near the herbal teas and there's often one or two different varieties with vanilla. My favourite is one from T2 but its loose leaf and you'd need to carry a diffuser.

I am a fan of black tea (its what I drink - not into milk anymore).
I just use the teal leaves now usually Earl Grey from T2 as they are a bit leaf tea and just add hot water and stir. Sip and spit the floatie leaves out but most of them sink. Then turf the dregs out to compost in the bush - no need to carry wet bags out anymore.
My coffee is much the same but I add a spoon or two of sugar - no milk.
Just add the coffee grounds to boiling water stir and take off the heat nearly at the same time, stir and tap the side of the pot and slowly pour out the coffee into a cup add sugar and yum. It may not be perfect but for the one or two cups I would have over a few days it is good for me.
I also use the jarrah hot chocky, usually from the bigger pot with about 3 teaspoons per cup decanted into ziplock bags.
Cheers and many hot drinks ahead.
PS a little nip of some very strong booze helps in the hot chock too

Soup is simpler. With or without the booze.

Lindt dark hot chocolate. Expensive but nothing better after a long cold walk!

Thanks for all the info. Look like I'll be trying out a few different options. Cheers.

I like Nescafe GoldBlend instant, a mix of Milo and Ovaltine, Cadburys drinking chocolate, billy tea in T-bags, large leaf Oolong, usually powdered milk although not with the Oolong, plenty of sugar, Tang, Black Adder liquorice tea and raspberry cordial, hot raspberry cordial is quite delicious as is hot jelly

So far I've found this is the hot chocolate I like best from powder just using water. Extreme Choc is a bit much for me but still good

After coming back from 6 months in Italy I had developed a taste for Ciobar hot chocolate however it requires milk and some patients stirring and adding the milk gradually so I save that oone for home

I'd really love to find a thick 'instant' hot chocolate that you only need hot water for though I'm not sure they're out there.
scownie, is the Lindt hot chocolate thick/dense?

I just put dark chocolate and milk powder in hot water (sometimes sugar) and then give it a stir to make my self a hot drink.

Yep me too. Nescafe they are. I go for either the sweet latte or cappucino. Cappucino comes with a handy little chocolate shaker that I have found useful for other things as well. No messing about with sugar or milk - it's all in the one sachet.

I had one of these the other week:
http://www.whiles.com.au/products/choc- ... ts-sachet/A one shot sachet hot chocolate with marshmellows thing, was damn tasty. Cost $1.50 so not the cheapest option but for one night out of the week with regular ones the other nights it was nice.
Edito: Just had a look through the website and plenty of tasty hot drink and cup-o-drink type things, and looks like they are Australian owned and operated. Ill be asking for them at the local IGA if they arent on the shelves already.

One teaspoon Milo, one teaspoon powdered milk, scolding hot water.. Boom shanka! Delicious. Also, herbal tea is very nice on a winters eve

Aldi have excellent hot choc sachets (' Alcafe' brand) in hazelnut, caramel and chocolate flavours. No need to add milk, the drink is beautifully creamy and even better than Jarrah.
