how do you carry it?

Hi,

just thought it might be interesting to see how you carry your various items...
I began this thought with olive oil - i use a stainless steel hip flask but saw the item below at the shop today and it got me thinking about how others tackle this and other tucker issues... i shouldn't have skipped breakky i guess
(sorry 'bout the tiny pic.... will get a better one if ya want...)

For liquids like oil, small plastic screw cap bottles - lighter than hip flask and some carefully applies thread tape helps with any leakage concerns. Stand it upright in the pack and it should be OK. Often wondered if there were smaller capacity "Platypus" type flatpack containers around - similar to the oil refill you found. Those aren't terribly durable by the way. I use them at home and they are really only an "open and refill bottle" expectation. They tend to drip.

I use lunch-sized plastic ziplock bags for non-liquids.

For liquids I have been aquiring small plastic bottles
- Used vanilla essence bottle
- used mini milk bottles provided with a Qantas breakfast on a recent work trip to Sydney
- etc

As for your hip flask, I really think that it should be put to its original, intended use!

i also tend to save toothpaste tubes (for jams, butter,etc)
screw top bottles (like betadine mouthwash bottles for eg)
small drybags for flour sometimes....
lunch boxes for biscuits....
freezer bags for dry / premixed meals...
any other ideas?

oil and rum both go in a small screw top nalgene bottle for me. so far no leaks and i still have no mixed the two up... yet...

I carry cereal and dont like it crushed , cant stand crumbs so I carry my cereal in a two litre milk bottle, I can get 6 days worth in a 2 litre.
I also cut the bottoms off 2 x 2 litre milk bottles and then push them together, makes another fairly crush proof container that is very light, sometimes use a 3 litre containers as well.

I'm with Macca81. Small Nalgene containers marked with a permanent marker. Not a worry after many years. Regards.

I've been lurking these forums for a while but thought this is as good a time as any to register and contribute.

I like those little baby food packs (similar to the olive oil pack you posted), they come in 90 and 120ml sizes and have been pretty durable for me - some of the baby food flavours aren't bad either.
Those and ziploc bags for non liquids.

Another idea are those little black film canisters! I know they're ancient now.... heheh
I'm sure you could probably get some from a photo shop.

Ok, i read this and tried to clean out some toothpaste tubes and refill them, one with jam and the other with nutellex margarine. teh margarine tasted like toothpaste. how do you clean them properly i thought i had! tips please.

We solved the issue by not carrying olive. Fry the onions in a bit of water and away you go.

The Bushwalker's Pantry: Mark 1

For years I've walked with a friend who carries all his food in a "pantry". It's an old shoe holder made from nylon or similar. My wife thought she might improve on the design, so she made me one out of some surplus parachute silk (or a cheap variation on it). We're still refining it, but as the pic. shows, it has individual, elasticised compartments for holding different food parcels. You could do it day by day, but generally I just stuff things in "thematically" (scroggin here; rice there; tea/coffee somewhere else; dehyd. curry up there etc). The top and bottom are held in place by small velcro strips, and the whole thing rolls up and is tied together by material straps.

It works a treat. One potential refinement we're considering is some see-through windows in each compartment to help us find what we're after more quickly. Or we might consider labels, although that seems a bit anal

I have seen similar things previously - same idea is used for first aid kits and essential tool kits, so why not food?

The local $2 shop has these 99c audio tape head cleaning kits. There is a small bottle of volatile head cleaning fluid, my guess is for the price, it is water and 1% metho. Anyways, these little bottles seal perfectly, around 5-10ml depending on brand of kit, and perfect for small amounts of soya sauce, vinegar, oil, detergent, chain lubes (this last one is interesting, some suppliers sell a bio chain lube, main constituent is Soya oil.

I saw a similar item like the pantry - was a few kids socks sewn to one side of an old pillow case. Sew the foot section only, then flip over the ankle part to 'seal' the pocket. Turn the pillow case inside out (optional step for increased security), then roll up.

Love the "Pantry" Idea. A possible improvement, you could make it modular with velcro sections. Say
sections containint 4/8/16 compartments

Each 4 section can be jouned to make an 8 and 4 to make a 16? This way it could suit any length walk
or be sectioned off for members of the group?
