Wanted - 3 Minute Pasta

Postby rohjoe » Thu 07 Oct, 2010 7:18 pm

Anybody seen 3 Minute Pasta for sale in the Hobart area? The brands I know of are Vetta Express and San Remo Pasta Pronto.
New Town Coles and Woollies are not stocking them any more and 2 minute noodles with bolognaise sauce just doesn't do it for me! :D
Cheers,
Rohan

buy the fresh pasta from woolies/coles. forget the name, but it is in with the garlic breads and the ravioli etc. takes 2 mins to cook, tops. have not walked with it, but im thinking about it. its not bone dry, but i think it would hold up for a few days with no problems.

Great minds think alike Corvus! Here are my findings:

Vetta stopped manufacturing Vetta Express several months ago.

San Remo advise that Pasta Pronto is no longer stocked by Coles and Woollies. They continue to supply IGA stores in all states except Tassie. Checked with a local IGA store and they confirmed that Pasta Pronto is not available here because Tasmanian IGAs are restricted to the same wholesale lines supplied to Woolworths stores.

So will focus on the fresh pasta idea for now. The under-used pasta machine at home might have to be dusted off.

Digressingly slightly, I spoke to Cerebos who make Foster Clarks instant custard because I'm tired of paying rip off prices for the small sachets. They advise that this product used to be available in 3 kg  but is no longer. Only size sold is rip off small sachets.

G'day,
Did a quick check in Woolies today San Remo do an Angel Hair Pasta that they claim cooks in 2 mins might be worth a try.

Wanted - 3 Minute Pasta

Postby Bluegum Mic » Fri 08 Oct, 2010 4:47 pm

Howdy! I was going to suggest angel hair pasta. Snap! :-)

The other thought (though a bit of a waste) is the pasta from easy Mac minus the cheese sachet?? Mind you not a huge amount but nice and light.

Had fettucini last night, bought one of the fresh packs from the supermarket. Their instructions say 2 minutes. I was monitoring as I cooked it, I reckon if you had water to a rolling boil then stuck the pasta in, turned the flame off, and waited a few minutes that would work well. If the boil is too high with the pasta in it, it has a tendancy to froth up and boil over, a bit like boiling milk.
For dried / longer lived pasta, I agree with the Angelhair idea.

Coles in KingsMeadows (Launceston) is HUGE, they carry about 39,000 items. Might be worth a look, or maybe asking their grocery manager for ideas.

Just an idea re: Soups. You can't really go wrong with the little Contintal packs and after all, you will come home again one day and be able to eat stuff that's good for you. They're light enough to be of minimal concern and the filler stuff in 'em give a cup a solid feel; gap-filling has begun. But over a few days the packaging mounts up, a little.
Know therefore that Massel, the Stock people, also make a "Bouillon" in the same size/shaped container; (coloured dark blue), as their Stock comes in. It's specifically for tea spoon, quick style souping. No packaging problems if transfered to a single Snaplock bag (doubled to be safe). More a broth style without the filler stuff. Salt may aggravate slightly but needed at the day's end, so trial it first. A minor weight saving, esp. over a few days away. Transfat free; they trade on their healthy contents, so Halal/Kosher. Stock used for soup, by contrast, is higher fat; not good if you're feeling a little "loose".

Decided to test the San Remo Angel Hair Pasta today for lunch.
In a 900ml billy brought 500ml of water to a rolling boil added salt and 50gm of Pasta broken in 1/2 and cooked uncovered for exactly 2 mins ,removed from heat put lid on and let it sit for 2 mins and drained.
End result perfect 'al dente' pasta that you could serve to any one :D

Glad to hear the Angel Hair experience was a positive one, Corvus. Any trouble straining it? It looks like it could be fiddly with a pot lid.

Used a MSR 900g Titan Kettle with a good small pouring spout and only lost three strands but any billy with care would do the job or you could go up market and purchase one of those cutting mat /strainer things :)

How about cooking the normal pasta then dehy. I do that with spaghetti and have had great success. Just add boiling water and rehy. I used to do this and the pasta sauce separately, now I just do the lot together. But I do cook this combo a little then rest for 10 mins. Just like a home cooked one.
The pasta does break up a bit but it is better than slopping your dinner over yourself.

The 3 minute pasta is back in Woolies New Town (Hobart). It's a Vetta brand one and I saw it yesterday.

Our daughter loves the Easy Mac by Kraft. I was unaware of it in our cupboard, until I was searching for her secret stash of chocolate biscuits. So I cooked up a packet in the shed (where all of my experiments come to life) add the macaroni to 170ml cold water, bring to boil, stand for 2 mins or so, ready to eat after draining. Comes with a sachet of cheese to mix with the water before draining if desired. The cheese is an acquired taste, but adds a bit of fat (for satiety or fullness) and calcium. About $3 for a box of 4 packet serves I'm told.

Vacuum seal the bag - pinhole one end, suck out the air, then a piece of sticky tape over the hole. You lose the air cavity that protects the pasta somewhat.

Napilitana Penne is the pasta, not sure if there is any other selections, that's the only one I saw, and it's 200g with 1500kj per bag.

Sun Rice has a new pasta range in a pouch that cooks in 90 seconds in a microwave, you just tear the top open a little and cook it, I guess you could do the same in a pot and boil it for a few minutes to cook it then eat it straight from the bag, I think the bag is foil, though have not opened it yet.

You could always pour it in in your pot and cook it like that if you wanted.

/PS just looked at the bottom of the pack and it's clear, SO IT AINT FOIL, though if you can put in a microwave for 90 seconds, it should stand up to 2 minutes of boiling right :)

Cheers.

I just cooked it in my mess tin on my Trangia, you need to add some water and maybe some extra herbs and spices to it to give it some more flavour, it's a bit dry and tasteless.

Probably dry because it is designed to be cooked in a microwave, also you need to stir it a lot or it will burn, the extra water would probably stop the burning :)

I can see it can be tasty with a few additions.

Cheers.
