Cooking without dehydrated food?

Mon 11 Feb, 2013 9:15 pm

I can't stomach the backcountry dehydrated meals I've tried! Are there any books or online resources with ideas on relatively lightweight meals suitable for multi-day hikes? Haven't had much luck searching so far.

Backcountry is freeze dried not dehydrated. Dehy food is simple with a dehydrator. I have done a lot of meals and snacks this way.

Trailfood.com is a great resource for meals idea and know how. Dehydrators are fairly cheap to buy.

Food to Go is a great eBook all about preparing great food for extended bushwalks. It was written by a forums member.

You can get creative with meals that you can get from the supermarket.

A personal favourite of mine is to get some Mac Cheese, cook in some dehydrated peas with a can of tuna.

That is... if Tuna is your thing. :)

Just be creative!

As for Backcountry... I know what you mean. That stuff is disgusting. I tried it once, and I never went back. Their Lamb Fettuccine was indescribable. Seriously, words can not describe how bad that stuff tasted...

It might be worth checking out some other brands though. Strive Foods is my favourite, just placed an order for a trip this weekend. In my opinion, its the best dehydrated food that you can get, although the cook time is a bit longer, and a simmer is required. Their Bolognese is to die for! Pretty sure there's a thread or two on them on the forums about them.

I often use ready made packets of rice/pasta as a base - available at most supermarkets. Add some dried vegetables and a few slices of salami, and spices to taste.

Or you can pre-prepare your own meals and dry them yourself in either a food dehydrator, or a regular oven in 2-3 hours at a very low temperature.
