Muffins in a Jetboil

I have been toying with making a Bakepacker for some time, but since I have started using a Jetboil I have been reluctant to go back to pots etc.

I decided to experiment with baking in the Jetboil.

The pot stabiliser that you buy as an extra for the Jetboil struck me as the perfect item to use in the bottom of the pot to keep the mix out of the water.

So I mixed up some White Wings muffin mixes, which only require water added, and placed it inside a plastic bag on the stabiliser

Set the water boiling for 15 minutes at a low simmer.

I was very surprised at the quality of the muffins produced, absolutely no taste difference with the control batch I produced in a conventional oven.

I intend to refine the system and use Silicone muffin cups, then make a hanging divider from aluminium flashing so that two batches can be done simultaneously.

Next I am going to measure the gas use for each batch, and will post it here if anyone is interested.

Having just got a Jetboil and not yet used it I would be very interested in your results.

Just getting the picture straight in my mind - the stabiliser was folded inside the pot with the mixture sitting on this in a bag perched above the boiling water.
So you are effectively cooking with steam?

Is that correct?

Thats correct, the mixture was in a standard plastic bag.

Google 'Bakepacker' and you will see how the comercial version works.

This works exactly the same

Sorry I have taken so long to post some pics.

Here goes.

I use the mixture shown below, you only need add water.

I start by dividing each individual mix into three, which makes a bag of mix weighing 100g and needs 60 Ml of water to make.

The cup on the Jetboil is marked in Mls and the bottom one is what I use. (Actaully 62.5 Mls, but who's counting)

It is them mixed by hand in the bag and from here can be cooked in the bag or with muffin cups.

To cook in the bag I put the ring inside the Jetboil upside down.

I then cook for 20 minutes at the slowest boil I can get from the stove.

And here is what it looks like.

I'm not sure about cooking in the bags I have shown, I think there is a taste in the muffin, in past I have used oven bags which havn't produced a taste.

I will show another method in the next post using muffin cups.

I decided to try and make muffins that look like muffins so I came up with the method below.

The mixing is all the same as above, but then spoon it into silicone muffin cups.

Put them on aluminium racks made from flashing and lower into the Jetboil and hook over the top.

The lid fits over the aluminium ok.

When done this way it also uses a little less fuel as it only takes 15 Mins to cook.

The muffins taste as good as if they were made in the oven, probably a little moister due to the water vapour used for the cooking.

The muffins shown in the photo rose a little more than expected, that's why they are a little mashed on top, but otherwise as good as an oven.

There is definately no plastic taste with this method.

The whole contraption only weighs 30g, which includes the silicone cups.

I am impressed with you effort they look really good ,not good for my add boiling water only cooking method but I may experiment with my cook in the freezer bag method .
How long do you cook them.

They take about 20 mins in a bag.

I have some Multix STeamer bags which I think would solve the plastic taste problem.

I normally only eat from bags as well, but tdecided this might be a good treat.

Great tips as I tried to cook muffins on my last tasi walk and they were a disaster.

I've been doing the same thing in my jetboil, nothing like a berry cake to start the morning off right !

Far out, you guys eat well. Hot muffins in the middle of nowhere...
You try cooking that stuff anywhere near my camp I warn you now you're in trouble, ok? :wink:
