Yes quigs, MW=AM.
Your question prompted me to exhume our 1982 vintage Sony MW and SW radio which we used to take walking for weather and fire warnings (weighs 390g). It still works beautifully - successfully tuned in local radio in Melbourne and Hobart, but it was only football, so a bit of a bore

.
Sorry I can't help with advice on a new radio though.

Be aware that in a lot of places now - the ABC radio stations are also broadcast on the FM band. This is certainly true in Tasmania where FM reception on the Central Plateau and on mountains in the South West is much better than AM reception. An example is Pine Valley - very poor reception of AM ABC stations but quite good FM reception of the same stations. Handy to get weather reports or cricket scores.

At night and early in the morning reception of ABC on AM in Tasmania is 936 and lots of mainland stations at other times you need to rely on FM. I carry a small AM/FM radio wherever I go Bushwalking in Tasmania, a $13 Kmart one. Very rarely disappointed.
