Every Trail / Map My Hike alternatives

Wed 03 Dec, 2014 8:20 am

Hi guys

I'm looking for an alternative for Every Trail or Map My Hike.

It seems Every Trail is semi broken right now, as for the past week it hasn't been allowing anyone to upload trips from their Androids or Apples. Would've been nice to know this before hand, as I used Every Trail to record the trip. Spent a few hours figuring out how to extract the plots and convert to a GPX file, but I've now done that.

Map My Hike looks nice, however its not intended for workouts/trips greater than 24 hours long. I did K2K last weekend, and while some people can do that in 24 hours, I can't

My intention is to embed the GPX file on a blog, and maybe share it on Facebook too

That'll depend on your available GPS HW.

If you are on Garmin, then there's always Garmin Connect. Otherwise you may be better off to use an app (many options)/HW to just record the GPS log. Using one of those start-up services will always run the risk of them folding up at some point, and lose all your record.

Thats kind of what I'm after. I use a Samsung Galaxy as my GPS, I don't use a dedicated unit.

So I need both an Android app to log the trail, and a suitable method to publish the GPX on Facebook and a Wordpress blog.

MotionX-GPS is a well acknowledged app on iOS and suspect they also have an Android solution. But others can chip in on the Android side with other suggestions. For blog use, it depends on your particular demand. For a simple image, then you can import your GPX into Google Earth and frame grab. If you want to give more interactive functionalities, you should be able to do similar through GoogleMaps and many other similar services out there by importing your GPX. Strava is one that is popular in the cycling world and think they'll be around for a long time to come.

Ah cheers. I assume MotionX-GPS allows you to pause/resume, even through a power cycle of the device (turning it off at night)? Its surprising how many apps can't do that (Endomondo is one)

GPSLogger is what I use for general walk logging as well as Open Street Map traces. Very configurable and very light on battery usage. Well worth a try.

Cheers,
Michael.

I've since found all these apps which serve as a great combination...

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... s.mytracks - Android GPS logger, published by Google, lots of bells and whistles, free, can export KML or GPX, syncs automagically to Google Drive if you have Internet, can resume through power cycles of the device (ie. you can turn off the device at night, and resume the same track/recording the next day)
http://www.gpstrackeditor.com/ - Windows app to edit GPX files, free
https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-maps-gpx-viewer/ - Wordpress plugin, can display Open Cycle Map & elevation profile, free
