I have just started using routing planning websites to plan bushwalks.
At first I used
http://openrouteservice.org/ but recently it went down with the message
Routing temporarily available only within Germany.
Then I tried
http://www.yournavigation.org/ but it had some weird useability glitches.
Today I found
https://www.plotaroute.com and I have to say this is the best of the lot! It's the easiest to use and that's what counts.
What do you use?

Try Route Mapper, an IPAD app. Its app based is quick and you can save and export routes in .kml format, to open them in google earth. I use it to plan bushwalks and kayak trips

I suggest you try gpsies. I have used numerous track plotting programs and find it the most suitable for my use. I suggest setting the name of the track then plotting the track in full screen mode and exiting from full screen to save.
