TasMaps.. Digital maps of Tasmania App.

Hi Guys.
Just thought I'd drop in and share a little program I wrote a little while ago.
It downloads a digital copy of Tasmaps 1:25000 maps (in .JPG image format) and also creates an Oziexplorer .Map file.
(Admins, mods, law abiding citizens of the world... My interpretation of the copyright notice on thelist.tas.gov.au/ leads me to believe that this is perfectly legal, as I'm giving it away.. IE: I have no commercial interest at all)

It was born from the annoyance that you could browse all of the maps on "thelist" website but obtaining/saving an actual copy was just so much of a pain/near impossible. So after becoming redundant at the start of the year, I decided to do bugger all for a few months apart from a few things, this being one of them.

I did have a web page with all the required info about this, but I moved my server to home and forgot to backup a few things. So, I've done a little youtube video as the next best thing.. (Just scroll down a tad..)

Here's a few pics to wet your appetite:

Please note.. I wrote this 8 months ago and haven't looked at the code since, It is more than likely BUGGY as hell (Version 1.0).
At the moment, there are a few things that don't work due to my backup snafu ( feedback, new version check etc). BUT, at the moment, I know what it's bugs are and can personally work around them as I wrote it for my own use, it's good enough for me but If people like it, then I'll reignite it and fix the bugs.

Sorry about the background music, I thought I had the volume down low enough.
Watch on Youtube for 1080HD quality (right click on video and select "watch on youtube")

I'd appreciate any feedback, comments, criticism etc etc

Sounds like a nice tool. However, have you complied with the copyright notice on the front page of the LISTmap site? It has its own copyright notice which is a bit different to that of theLIST site.

LISTmap wrote:© COPYRIGHT ... no part of the report may be copied without the permission of the General Manager, Information and Land Services, Department of Primary Industries and Water, GPO Box 44 Hobart 7001.

Tasmap are about to start selling their 1:25k maps online, so if you don't have their permission they may not like this.

Great little application. Have been looking for a means to get Tasmap maps digitally- it would appear that this is not going to happen in the next little while...

Couple of link errors to note: "Dome"4035 (lake st clair area) is confused with St pauls Dome 5637, Ada shows Adamsfield, Scotts shows Scotsdale.
Wonder if it's much work to fix these links?

Would be happy to pay a nominal fee for downloading such maps. Probably not $10 for every one I need... especially given one then needs to scan and georeference each to upload to oziexplorer etc.

cheers

pete

Hi Fritz,

I agree that it's a great application. I too have found that you cannot get Scotts (4423), you get Scottsdale (5444) instead.

Could the resolution be improved at the expense of a longer download, or is it a limitation of the List site?

Regards
Andrew

You'd need to do a bit of work for oziExplorer and Google Earth, because TheList maps don't line up on the grid (see image).

For a good example take a look at "Solitary, 4224".
