Has anyone used one of these? Is the Thuruya network similar to iridium? Specifically for use in NZ backcountry, plus Oz alpine areas

From https://www.satphonesales.com.au/Which- ... k-and-Plan

Geostationary satellites. Iridium satellites move ... 66 of them .. so it is not the same.
Some of NZ is not covered.

We have a satsleeve where I work. It can be a little odd, doesn't like some phones, or rather, some phones don't want to stay connected to it, and can be a battery hog since you have to keep two devices charged. That said, when its working it does work well, but its a satphone, none of them are good.

From that link, Thuraya (it does help to spell it correctly) had only 2 geostationary satellites. One is west of Australia (and the other is further W still) so, in NZ, you might have coverage on top of Mt Cook but not likely anywhere else.

Might start another thread about sat phones then...
