Pedometer GPS+ app (iphone)

Sun 23 Jan, 2011 10:02 am

I loaded the Pedometer Pro GPS+ app (AUD $3.99) into my iphone 4.

Yesterday I went for a walk over Mt Banks and then down the fire trail as far as Edgeworth David Head. On the way back I stopped for more photos at Banks wall and decided to give the app a good test for the walk back along the main fire trail to the Mt Banks carpark.

Here are some screen shots from the log of that return journey:

The app also has features for tracking weight, BMI, etc. It does have basic features for exporting stats via e-mail. It claims to have a CSV export but I can't find that feature. It also lacks export of GPS track.

You do need to run the app in the foreground since the accelerometer will not function in background.

That looks good. Not sure about the Pedometer when you have GPS...

I use RunKeeper It has nice audio announcements of progress in distance, time, speed, split etc. Really very good, I do get some funny looks if one of the announcements happens when people are about. :) It uploads your walking to their website where you can track it, share it, etc. if you are so inclined.

Also, great feature: It's free this month:

It uses the GPS and the accelerometer in combination. The GPS helps determine an accurate speed / pace whilst the pedometer function (based on the accelerometer) helps to more accurately determine energy consumed. It would be better if there was a Bluetooth-based heart rate monitor.

I use Motion-X GPS when I go cycling. I then load track logs into a program on my Mac that graphs my distance / performance over time.

Ah. I was wondering why they did the pedo bit...

You can do heartrate using wireless chest sensors via Wahoo if your app supports it. Wahoo Fitness Run Pack RunKeeper does, Bunch of other apps do too. Not Pedometer though, maybe they are working on it.

RunKeeper also records the gps trail for each activity, and you can download it from the website as GPX or GoogleEarth file.
