Garmin 60csx two versions

Tue 05 Apr, 2011 2:13 pm

Hi to all bushwalkers out there this is my first post, have really enjoyed reading all the posts very informative on all topics. I love bushwalking and am planning to do the Tasmanian trail in June, hope the weather is kind to me. I do have a question that hopefully someone could give me some advice on, I have never used a GPS but plan to buy the Garmin 60csx from an Australian internet site, but I have read that one has to be careful that it is not an American version, somehow you have all sorts of trouble with the maps and so forth.

They claim that it is an Ausie version but is there any way of making sure, thanks for any help on this, does anyone use this model GPS.

Hi TRACKMATE,

My first post too, though I feel like an old hand as I've been reading all the posts for a couple of years now. This is a great forum, so much useful information.

I bought a Garmin Etrex Vista HCx while in the USA a couple of years back, and have had no problems with it in Australia. I'd be surprised if the Garmin 60csx were any different. The only "issue" might be that the built-in base-map in my unit is the US version with only very basic information concerning the rest of the world. However, even in the US, the base map is too basic to be of much use. I have loaded two free maps onto my unit - the Shonky Maps 1:250K map of Australia, and some of the OSM (Open Street Maps) for Australia - actually the Open Cycle Maps (a different rendering of the OSM maps which highlights bike trails). I highly recommend them!

maps shouldn't be a concern.

but warranty claims are, if you have to make a claim Garmin will only deal with it in the country of the dealer you purchased from.

I've got an eTrex Legend cx and a 60cx, both bought very cheaply from US. had no issues at all so far.

any Oz maps I wanted to load have worked just fine.

Thanks Rolflex and DonQx seems as though I may be ok for warranty etc since I have bought it in Aus I got a bit worried when it was much cheaper than any where else, sorry for placing this post in the wrong place it seems as though It should have went in the gear section but thanks for replies.
